Car posted here

Was driving home on Monday night and as I came out a village to get on the A1M, the car stalled without warning and never restarted. I ended up blocking 2 lanes going onto a roundabout but luckily a police car was driving by and they helped push my car off the road. I then had to wait 6 hours to get towed home by the AA and it was diagnosed as the fuel pump as the car wasn't even attempting to turn over.

Spin on 3 days and the cars still in the garage, they've changed the fuel pump as it was dead but now the fuels getting to the front of the car but it's still not starting, and is now giving fuel relay and injector errors :(

The cars still under warranty by a 3rd party policy from the garage I bought it from. So far it's covering the fuel pump work but the limit of the claim is £400 and i'm starting to worry the cost will start to exceed this as the pump was £220 alone before labour, fuel and fuel filter. :(

£400 limit on a claim?!? That's hardly a warranty is it? Any bill less than £400 I can deal with, it's the big bills that you need help with. Shocking!

Could the car's security system not like the new fuel pump? Does it need to be coded to the car?

To hell with the 3rd party warranty, it should still be covered by the sellers warranty.

Does the warranty not cover more than one claim?

I've already claimed on it once to get the cd drive unlocked as the previous owner never did this when it was bought new - they lock in the sat nav disk to stop it being stolen.

What would this cover me for ?

I presume that you bought from a trader, so you are covered by a 6 month warranty from them.

It's 3 months and it covers everything (bar the usual, tyres etc).

Diagnosing the error as a fuel pump problem, when the engine isn't even turning over, is the first thing that starts ringing alarm bells for me - or do you mean it was turning over, but just not starting?

They offer their own 3 month warranty, they never seem to tell you about the 12 months cover provided by the Sale of Goods Act. Even though the car is 2nd hand you still have statutory rights as a consumer, ie faults developing in the first 6 months are deemed to have been present at the time of purchase, etc.

This is why you pay more from a dealer than a private sale.

I might of confused you, the car had power and was wurring when i turned the key but it wasn't turning over. When the AA guy sprayed in some flammable liquid into the air intake it did start.

The pump wasn't making any noise and it was black which they said was a sign the pump had died. - i assume where the electrics burnt out ?

Oh, I thought it was 3 months by law you see.

Turn over != start. You mean fire, by the sound of it it was turning over (the starter motor was cranking the engine) but not starting.

You really shouldn't use ether, or easy-start type fluids, on modern diesels. It can cause untold damage if you're unfortunate.

Not that I'd want to play devil's advocate, but maybe the pump was the original issue but the injector faults are symptomatic of the use of easy-start.

Hopefully that's not the case though - just sounds like they've some simple electrical diagnosis to do to track down the fault :)

Wifes fuel pump died on her Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 petrol Duratec on Thursday afternoon with no warning.

Lifted up the rear bench, cut the floor beside the fuel pump wiring grommet, folded the "flap" up, two crossed screwdrivers to get the old pump out, new pump in, folded flap back down, few spot welds and seam sealer - jobs a good un with an hours work :-)

Not really relevant to your scenario but just happy with a job well done :-)

Sorry you seem to be having probs with yours.

Is it with the garage/dealer you bought it from? Need to make it their problem not yours.

It's been taken to a garage right next to the dealer who he normally deals with. He's already said the warranty side will be dealt with by him as he'll have to get it authorised and pay and then claim it back.

The garage just called, the guy looking at my car phoned in sick today so nothings been done. The garage owner thinks it’s the fuel relay but nothing will be done till next week now which means i'll be without a car for a week on Monday
