Looking to get some decent speakers for general computer use (mainly music, games and movies). Not looking for surround, just two channel speakers.

This will be mostly for private use so I don't need huge amounts of volume nor do I need huge rumbling bass, though I do want something that can play deep bass notes fairly accurately. Whilst I'm not looking for super accurate sound, I do want something with a good balance of bass, mids and treble, especially mids which I find lacking on most pc speakers.

Initially I was set on the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 speakers, which would be most convenient as I have about 20cm either side of my monitor for the speakers (though plenty of space on the floor for a subwoofer), but the general opinion seems to be that 2.0 studio monitors are more accurate and balanced. I've looked at the M-Audio AV40 monitors, which look great but I've read that it distorts and makes buzzing noises? This is something I definitely do not want, as distortion and vibrating noise bug the hell out of me.

Is there anything else I should be looking at? Budget is £150.

Thanks in advance!

I was looking at that, but £200 is a little too high for me. Even £150 is pushing it as I was really looking to stay below £100 but willing to make an exception for something that is, well, exceptional.

How would these compare to the Aego M speakers? Is the midrange really that bad on these PC 2.1 speakers?

I currently have a really old set of 2.1 PC speakers (over 10 yrs old) which look a lot like the Aego Ms and while the sound is actually fairly decent, the midrange recession is quite noticeable, especially when compared to my headphones.

Not looking for anything that audiophile grade (not sure if I even could at this price range), but would like something that has a good balance of bass/mids/treble and not just bass and treble.

For £150 you could try looking at separates, this little lot (speakers and amp) (should mention I'm on about the big wooden ones, not the little 5.1 setup I used to have on my wall) cost me just over £60 and sound absolutely stunning compared to any all-in-one systems I've heard. On the look out for a cheap centre channel now and then I'll have a 5.0 separates setup for under £150; I'll build my own sub in the future. It takes a little patients but is well worth it :)

Q Acoustics 2010, ~£105, superb 2.0 bookshelf speakers.

honestly, look up some reviews :)

I have the 2020's to these, they are slightly bigger. I Have to say if it weren't for the deal I managed to get with the 2020's I would have happily snapped up the 2010's fantastic sounds from them! Just make sure you have something you can drive them with. Comparing them using my logitech z5400 amp to a proper amp (from the store I purchased them from) makes me cry :(

Any amp should work with them, however you really ought to try them out beforehand as you might find an amp fantastic that someone else doesn't like. Best bet is to try and find somewhere that will let you audition a few amps with those speakers and decide from there.

For reference there is literally nothing bad aboute Aego Ms. I'm not saying there aren't better speakers but everyone who hears them comments on the sound and I could listen to them for hours. I also have much better equipment downstairs so it's not that I don't know any better, they really are exceptional for a cheaper sub sat system.

I Have to agree about the aego m's. I am the same have much better full surround kit for tv, but these things are fantastic for pc I too can listen for hours and am constantly amazed.

Andrew Moore, made a thread on the Edifier R1600T's in the hi-fi section. He also owns the Aego's, but he rates the Edifier's, as having better sound quality. Considering how good the Aego's are, that makes the Edifier's quite a buy at £70. Aego's are probably still the better choice for people who like a bit more bass oomph, for game and film. For music, sounds like the Edifier's have a better over all sound.

I'd still get monitors and amp on that budget it's much better in the long run.

Some of it depends on space, In an ideal situation I'd completely agree but having been so happy with the Aego M's I don't think I could give up the space a decent set of satellites would take up let alone the amp. As you say though if space isn't a problem separates or monitors is probably the way to go. The only reason I even joined in the thread is because the OP asked if the Aego Ms were really "that bad" and the answer is no, they are fantastic its just that for the money, if you can compromise on space, you can have something a little better.

The Corsair Gaming Audio Series SP2500 speakers look fantastic from the specs. If i was looking for a 2.1 set and had room for the huge sub those are the ones i would go for.

The Acoustic Energy Aego M are not the best 2.1 speakers under £150. You can do better if you look at discontinued models. The Jamo i300 are superior in nearly every way and cost about the same as the Aego M when bought secondhand.

I've owned the AV40 before and yes they do buzz. It's frustrating watching people lie through their teeth or ignoring the problem when they review them. The bass is too exaggerated on those as well but some people prefer the colouration in the bass.

As for the person recommending the Logitech Z2300. I think that was nothing more than a wind-up.
