Are TV's different aspect ratio's for widescreens?
Just my brother brought in his new to him Sony and sat it next to our one to test it.
His is a 42" ours is a 32". But they look different. Almost like 16:10 for the 32" and 16:9 for the 42".
Also when we went TV shopping there was the occasional one that did look wider in appearance.

If it's a TV rather than a computer monitor then they should all be 16:9.

There are some ultra wide screens, but you'd easily recognise them.

Well this was just looking at them screen off. Guessing it may just be a trick of the eye due to the bezel or something like that.
Both are actual TV's

Get a tape measure an measure the screen diagonal.

Measuring the TV screen diagonally, will only tell them what they already know, one is 32" and the other 42". The aspect ratio is the height of the screen in relation to how wide it is.

They'll both be 16:9 no doubt, its just an illusion! If you can tell us the resolutions of both TVs I can tell you what aspect ratio the screen is.

Trick of the eye if they are both HD tvs as they will both be 1920*1080.

Although not quite true, my plasma is 1024x720 but it's still 16:9

Not true either. If they're Full HD TVs then yes, but plenty of TVs range from 1280x720 to 1366x768 etc...
