Hello,
While i am more than happy with the cooling performance of my new Gainward GTX570 Phantom ( for example an hour playing Mafia II and temps didnt go over 64 degrees , compared to my GTX295 hitting 96 degrees... ouch !! ) Anyway i ran a few benchmarks in Batman Arkham Asylum and in Mafia II and was surprised to see my GTX295 was beating the GTX570 by some 20 to 30 fps in most tests. Is that normal ? or is it because the GTX570 is more geared towards DX11 than the DX10 in my beloved XP Pro ?
I wouldnt go back to the GTX295 though as the cooling and the quietness of the GTX570 Phantom more than makes it worth the loss of fps .
Just curious.... ;)

The 295 is still a bit of a beast, even with it's lower clocks it still has very high memory bandwidth. As long as the game is well optimised for SLI it's quite possible for the 295 to match or better the performance of the 570. Certainly in DX9 on XP. The 570 might even it out or better it with DX10 though.

Your still better off with your 570 like you say as it runs cooler and quieter. I'm glad I upgraded to my 580 from a 295 as DX11 features should start appearing a bit more in upcoming games and I like the quietness! :p

295 is similar to a 480 (so 570) in a lot of games in dx 9 and 10, if SLI scales well in said game, and you dont hit the vram limitations of the 295.

Should find the 570 feels smoother, especially in mafia 2... nothing to do with microstutter tho, just better minimum fps and overall more consistant fps.

Hi and thank you all,
Yeah the GTX570 is smoother in Mafia II hits about 78 fps average and gets a Rank B rendering well rating.
It could be that my XP is ancient as well and that the GTX295 was using part of itself for PhysX . But it did stutter a lot esp in Splinter Cell Conviction. I havent tried that game yet with the GTX570 but i will .
Driver is 266.58 for GTX570 installed when i changed the cards. ;)

I have Windows 7 Pro retail in a box on the shelf next to my pc. Its been there since Oct 09 :o Dont really want to go into why i havent installed it but lets just say i prefer XP for my home use.

Seems pointless buying a top end video card if you're still on the antiquated OS that is XP :p
Do your computer a favour and get it installed, no point having it sat collecting dust on the shelf?

I know you said you don't really want to go into why you haven't installed it yet,
but seriously why are you clamouring onto something that doesn't support DX 10 or DX 11
Makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever???

The reason i held onto Xp so long is that i dont like any of the replacement email programs , i tried Thunderbird and the Windows Mail but didnt like those at all . Also as i wanted to go 64 bit i was waiting for more support.
Thats about it really. ;)

Get yourself win7 64 and an ssd to compliment your new gtx570 :) XP is holding it back.

I haven't had any 64bit support issues yet. I'm even able to run some very old printers and scanners that gave me trouble in xp.....

I see you have a 60GB OCZ SSD , do you run your O.S on that drive or just the games ? Cheers. ;)

I've popped the OS on the SSD, and use a couple of WDC black hdd's for my games and media. It really does make a big difference to boot up times and overall snapiness of windows.
