I have posted this on Fiestast forums and they think it is a oil seal what will need looking at as soon as possible.

Thought i would ask here aswell out of curiosity, maybe someone else has had a similar problem and can shed some light on it?

Copy and pasted:

After jacking the ST up i found this on the floor:

It is like red lubey stuff? Doesn't smell like oil...

This is where it was leaking down:

Do you think it is engine coolant? Just checked the engine coolant reservoir and its pretty much empty so i will top that up in not long. If it is this, what will be the problem? where will it be coming from?

anything else it could be?

Thanks

I will go out and check the car after Formula 1 as finished to see if it has leaked anymore.

Just hoping what i thought was a minta off a really nice honest loaded family, isn't actually a great big lemon!

Coolant could be coming from many places, radiator, split hose, water pump, cracked expansion tank.

What kind of liquid is it? Is it oily? If so it's not coolant, as that's just water based. If it's red and oily then odds are that it's gearbox oil.

Well pinky red greasy stuff from what i remember.

Just gone back out to check and nothing as leaked, though the coolant looks like it needs filling again? filled it to max yesterday whilst the engine was warm. Isn't the reservoir always ment to stay between min/max even if engine is warm or cold?

Going to have to ask my girlfriends brother-in-law to look at it later.

Well the people saying 'Gear box oil' to me sounds like "get the lube out, as you are going to need it".

am i right?

You're correct, it's a closed system so none should be escaping. How much has it dropped by? Look around the engine bay and under the car to see there is a leak, if it's dropped by a reasonable amount then there must be a leak from somewhere. Sounds like you have two separate issues, You need to get the car to a garage asap as you really don't want to run your gearbox dry.

Smell it, gearbox oil stinks!

Losing coolant is not a good sign, either. Fill it up, raise the car and observe.

Don't forget to use axle stands as well as the jack, jacks can and do fail, you don't want to be under there when it does.

Garages seem to think its a seal in the gearbox and the clutch and some hydraulic thing Will need replacing. Quoted 450 up to yet.

This is a random guess by them though and said the gearbox Will have to come out to find out.

Amazing stuff.

:(

Clutch slave/master cylinder I guess.

Might be worth getting the clutch changed at the same time if it's old. 450 seems quite high, can't remember what I paid for mine but I don't think it was more than that.

Will be ringing the fella who i bought it off as he said if i found anything up with it to ring him up.....so he Will be getting a phone call once Im home. See what he says.

Private sale? If so you might as well not waste your time! He'll have just said that to sound nice and make you feel confident about your purchase.

The area you point to is def the gearbox, not engine, power steering fluid doesn't go anywhere near there. The key thing is you mention its red-ish, Ford MTX75 gearbox oil has a red-ish tinge to it.
Pop open that black plastic cover as I'm sure the level plug is in there, make sure it's tight.

Ford coolant is usually red too, but its easy to tell the difference between oil and coolant.

Well took it to my girlfriends brother in law's garage and he as found the problem straight away. He put his hand down back of the engine and said 1 of the engine coolant pipes is rubbing and worn away, so once it is near boiling temperature it will be squirting out a tiny minute hole where it is worn.

I said it leaked a greasy/oily patch on the floor and he said that would have been because it as been wet where it as leaked down, so it has catched the road dirt/grime which would make it feel greasy.

Also a big point he made was to go back and still see if there is a oil patch on the road and there isn't.

Costing me 8 quid and 4 cans of carling to fix. :D

Worry over! (hopefully)

When i told him what garage i went to, he told me they are monkeys lol....

Im back in a good mood! :)
