Hi all, looking to trade my MX5 in for something cheaper to run (fuel wise), with four seats, cheap to tax but must be reliable. I'm not too fussy when it comes to cars but due to having to take a pay cut I'm not going to be able to afford to run the MX5 anymore. I would also like to have something that has a bit of grunt but is still decent for fuel.

Just wondered what people would suggest? I've thought about a Focus but not sure on the tax/fuel costs on them. I would look at something around the value of my MX5 £6000-6500, any advice would be great. Thanks!

The mx5 is regarded as quite a cheap to run car. If you can't afford to run it I think you will need to take quite a step down to see a noticeable change. 2k Fiesta?

Hi all my milage is only 7-8k, wouldn't mind 4 seats as well, but its mainly something thats cheap to tax and something that will keep petrol costs down. I get about 300 miles out of my 1.8 MX5, to be fair I probs have a heavy foot though lol.

My budget would be my car value which is about £5000-6000 and maybe £500 cash. In regards to tax I would like to keep it down as much as I can but it's something that's really economic on fuel that would be best and reliable.

My calculations may be way off here but if you're getting 300 miles to a tank and the tank is 48L then at 4.546 litres to a gallon you're getting about 28mpg? From a quick search it seems that mid thirties is more common for the 1.8L so yours seems a bit low unless you're doing a lot of town driving?

The reason I'm checking is if you're looking for something with a reasonable amount of power then it might not be all that much cheaper in terms of fuel if your driving style is the thing that is causing the higher fuel bills. However if you want something with 4 seats then the MX-5 is, of course, not the car for the task.
