Vegas!

Yeah, the heat might be a killer fox, but it works out that the choice is now August or December, so 'shaded' pool days have taken it, with lashings of factor 40 :)

So Rotty, are we talking a mammoth trek to the strip or something. That map I posted doesnt mean much to me. It looks to be 2 'blocks' from the strip, but I suppose a block could mean anything with the size some of these resorts are

Also, I'm guessing the strip is where all the bigger clubs etc are - but will there be lots of bars and things near to where ever we stay, or are they in fact all squeezed onto the strip in a certain place

Hmmmm, maybe google street view will help

Stayed in the Monte Carlo hotel when we went in August. Thought it was pretty good location because it was next to new york new york, then you have the excalibur and Luxor. MGM is almost across the road.

Also a tram runs from the monte carlo to the Bellagio so within a few minutes you can be centre strip.

We are going back week after easter staying in the Bellagio. Not sure what trips to do this time we did the south rim tour and went to Hollywood last time.

around 15-20 mins walk to the Strip

Rotty, or somebody else, can you do me a favour?

I'm on google streetview looking for the elusive strip, and have so far found giant freeway roads and roads, and more freeways. Have I got the idea of the strip wrong?

Is it not a big row of shops, bars, clubs etc?

If it is, can you point me at something I can put into streetview please.

Cheers

My only input regarding the 'lazing around the pool' plan is that while the pools are big, well sculpted and nice the sun loungers were crammed in with literally 6 inch gaps between them. This was at the Encore too, one of the better resorts.

The casinos do not want you lay on your backside chilling, they want you inside losing money.

You will find little shade unless you want to pay for a cabana or something along those lines and those things are not cheap per day.

We are staying at the Staybridge suites for 2 weeks all in all this summer because they have free cabanas, two huge hot tubs and a nice quiet pool. Sure, they are off strip but my other half doesn't drink so free taxi for me :D

Keep that in mind when looking for a hotel as it is nothing like your typical European pool scene with spacious lounge areas and brollys.

Cheers Youstolemyname

Gits :D

Suppose it would be wise to consider these things. I do have a tendancy of melting pretty easily. But, freezing vs too hot.. I still think too hot takes it. And luckily, i love a gamble, so can only assume I will love an air conditioned gamble even more so

The Rio is the latest on our hit list. Off strip, but 'only' 0.8mile from the centre of the strip (the eifel tower etc) according to google maps, which doesnt seem too bad. Plus, all its rooms are suite based, and look pretty nice to be honest

And yeah, my previous post, I may have been on the actual freeway on street view, which is why I couldn't see much :)

Booking when a mate gets paid in the middle of April, and so far, I think the Rio is edging the win. I've looked at that many though to be honest, I dont care anymore :)

iirc while the Rio might only be 0.8 miles there isn't a sidewalk (pavement) and it is the other side of the freeway. Cab ride wouldn't be too expensive though and there may be a shuttle bus. Just something to keep in mind.

There are free shuttles to/from Rio but these can get full, as said it isn't really walkable

The suits there are large rooms/junior suites rather than full suites and they really are getting tired and could do with s refit

Well, after much.. much.. much thought, and re-thought, its finally booked :D

2nd of August, 10 nights, staying at the Rio. Been chatting to a entertainment orginiser typer person (not a hooker) for the last week, and we have been upgraded to one of their Premium strip view suites with their compliments :) Nice touch, but cant see it being one of the super s****y pads, but should at least be one of the newer rooms

Total cost was £1160, which when said fast, isn't too painful. Spending wise, I'm gonna budget for £2000 and see what happens. Room has a fridge, so wont have to drink at bars all the time, which is lucky looking at some of the cover charges :)

Settled on the Rio after reading it is more aimed towards fun, and their pool looks amazing. Plus, a club on the roof which is 51 floors up. Downside is being off the strip, but its less than a mile to the centre of the strip, which technically is closer than a lot of the hotels on the strip. Admittedly, crossing a giant freeway might be a bit sketchy, but cant imagine taxi's being too ruthless

And yeah, I bought a hat. I is gonna burn!! :D

Rather than start a new thread... Rotty (or anyone else) - can you give me a pointer on a decent steak place fairly central on The Strip? Something around $75 per head for a main and sides and fairly informal? Only going to be there 2 nights on my upcoming trip so not enough time to experiment with loads of places!

Each to their own I guess, can't stand repetitive holidays in the same place for ages. So many awesome sights within 1000 miles of Vegas, you could see so much of it in 10 days :)

Yeah there are some cool places but I did the South Rim of the Canyon and the Hoover Dam so I was happy. However by day 9 I was repeating things I had already done but I wasn't bothered as I hadn't wasted time sunbathing or swimming. :)

10 days aint really that long. Personally, I cant believe you can be bored, or not enjoy yourself, when on any holiday

Its a holiday. Relax and have fun. I can not wait

Truly suprised at the ammount of people I have told (proper people, not you interweb type people) who's first words were along the lines of "10 days.. in vegas, are you mad?"

Personally, I'm not really big into sightseeing, so dont plan on doing much, if any. I've done a fair bit, from Auswitsch to Volcanoes (really wanted a Z, dammit), but I dont like the feeling of doing something millions of others have done just so they can say they have done it. Just my personal take on it

Much prefer a wider view. An adventure, if you like. Vegas spells this out to me :D

So, £2000.. adequate do we think?
