Hi chaps, I am looking for recommendations for a new router as my current setup draws too much power and makes too much noise. I am using a Juniper J2300, Cisco 3550, Netgear WG602v3 wireless AP and the modem Sky sent me with my broadband package.

The sort of features I am looking for are as follows, they don't all have to be met but the more the better:

Built in ADSL2+ modem, multi pvc support would be a plus.
Gigabit LAN ports
Built in wireless AP, preferably to 802.11n spec
Command line management
Low power consumption
Separate RJ45 WAN port
IPv6
Firewall
VLAN support

Does such a device exist? I've been looking at either the Draytek Vigor 2830n, Cisco RV220W or the Billion BiPAC 8200N. if any of you have any advice I would love to hear it!

How skilled are you with Linux? You could probably achieve that using a small intel Atom board and a couple of PCI/PCIe Intel NICs. Keep your Wireless AP and the Sky modem & boom, you're in :)

Although I use Linux quite a bit I don't think I would consider myself skilled exactly. I don't know whether I would have the ability to make an effective router/firewall though I could certainly give it a shot. I had given it some thought before but making a mini-itx system (or similar) seems pretty expensive compared to a conventional router.

How easy is it to create a wireless AP on a linux platform if the motherboard had a mini pci slot card onboard?

Seems very odd to me that you have some decent high-end kit, and then want what is essentially a piece of garbage all-in-one router/ap/firewall?

Why do you need a gigabit router exactly? Is your WAN connection >100Mb?

Seems pointless, just get some gigabit switching.

Perhaps I shouldn't have put 'gigabit' in the thread title, the only real reason I wanted a gigabit router was so that I didn't have to have a separate switch along side. I could have just one small, neat box which draws next to no power.

I love the kit that I have and it's been great fun setting it up and using it but I really can't cope with the amount of power it all draws. I know that whatever I get just isn't going to compare to it in terms of functionality but it just has to be done.

Draytek all the way!

Out of curiosity which model(s) of theirs do you use? The 2830 has just come out and there really isn't a great deal of user feedback on it.

Personally there is nothing I know of which does all that in one box that I'd use, strip out the switching and it's easier but I still don't know of a box I like which has decent wireless, routing/firewall and an ADSL2+ modem in the box...probably a Cisco 1941W comes closest with the appropriate HWIC (indeed you could also chuck in a switch HWIC and have a one box solution I guess if that gives you enough ports) - not a cheap box though.

1941 is a cracking lil router, 2U though.
Look at the 1921 for a 1U option although not sure if it does wireless.
