Heya pals,

Im posting this question for my friend who does not have a OCUK account.

He is running a MSI P67, I5-2500k, Vertex 2E, and GTX 480 rig.

He recently changed his SATA controller from IDE to ACHI and noticed a jassive decrease in performace (significant drop [minus 30 fps] on games like AC II: Brotherhood) and a significant increase in the GTX 480 temps when he tried playing games.

His normal temps never exceed 70 C - After switching to ACHI the temps started hitting mid 80's

He reverted back to IDE but it appears the problem has persisted.

Any ideas OCUK ?

Well usually going from IDE to ACHI requires a new OS install. Did he have to do this?

He asked me:

Would he lose his?
  • Music
  • Steam Games
  • Movies

If he resinstalled W7

You can easily back those things up and just move them all over after the install. It can take a while depending on how much he has though. Also, there's an option when installing Windows to keep all of your old stuff. It simply puts them into a windows.old folder I believe. However, I'm not sure what effect this has when reinstalling windows mode in AHCI. I can't imagine that it matters but someone else will have to verify that.

UPDATE:

He did a fresh install of windows and the problem persists.

He was getting roughly 80-100 FPS on MW2 and now he is getting 30-50...

Would it have something to do with the fact that he changed the 'start' value of the PCIE in Regedit..?

He didn't back up his Regedit... Is there a default regedit online?

simply changing over ide to achi shouldn't effect anything else like the GPU.

its likly he changed something else thats causing the problem.

i assume he has 2 harddrives, the vertex and another drive?

if so, copy all the music/games/movies onto the other drive.
then u can wipe the vertex and reinstall win7 onto that so its a clean install
i would also suggest unplugging the other drive while u do the install
then u can plug it back in after and get the data back.

if the problem persists, try looking in the bios to see if any other settings might have changed causing the problem

thanks for the response escrow.

He reformatted both driver and reinstalled W7 on his vertex.

He is reinstalling MW2 to see how the performance is..

He'll also send me some benchmarks of his rig.

I only have a low clock on it at the moment, 800 core, 1986 mem with no extra voltage. To be honest it did'nt even need that as it maxes everything i have at 1920x1200 easily. Maybe one day i will have a proper go at clocking it. Idle temps are mid 20's, normal gaming temps are high 30's/low 40's depending on the game and after 30 mins of Furmark Stability test hits 48 degrees.
