I want to play poker, especially Texas Hold em (often see it on TV really late on and played it in Red Dead Redemption :D), but want to play it on my PC. So i just installed the PokerStars program, set up my account blah blah and was looking for some free games to play for fun, problem is everyone is going way too fast for me :o

So if anyone has it and wouldnt mind a few steady paced games with me let me know, im not 100% sure how its played but if its like it was in Red Dead Redemption i might be ok :p

the menus and things in the PokerStars program are fairly confusing, first time user of it :so might take me a while getting round it :)

remember its for fun, dont lure me into a proper game and take me to the cleaners :D

You will not learn anything playing for free mate, as people do not take it seriously when there is no money involved and games will just be mad.

When i first started playing poker, i deposited £5 into ladbrokes poker and played on the beginners tables for a while. played for very low stakes and is a great place to start playing poker. The most you can bring to the table was $5 when i was playing it around 6 years ago. Blinds were 2p and 5p!

I would definitely recommend ladbrokes as well:)

But then again a beginner can't go straight into a game with money without knowing the basics first. As he says he isn't sure how to play.
I do play on PokerStars and on free money games and free-roll and if I wasn't away from my PC for the next two weeks i'd help you out.

There's plenty of other PokerStars users on OcUK so i'm sure they can get you up and running.

Yeah but i would argue that playing free games, you might get a skewed impression of how to play.

If you are not actually sure of the rules, then maybe it is ok, but it's not really anything like real poker. But if you are just playing for fun, thne it's fine.

Pokerstars do some good freerolls, but i don't play on there anymore since i had trouble withdrawing form there a few years ago.
Definitely play freerolls as opposed to playgames:)

edit- i might have misread the op, i thought he was playing playmoney games, but freerolls are great for beginners:)

I have got Pokerstars yes, though I prefer to play on Absolute Poker. The $0 freerolls seem more abundant, and things just generally suit me better. It was the first site I ever started using as well.

WOW, is Absolute Poker still about?
I didn't think it was going to recover from the 'super user account' scam a few years ago.

I stand by Ladbrokes poker. Some very good games and the banking system is the best i've used by a mile. I withdrew some winnings from there a month or 2 ago, and it cleared 2 days later. No checks at all.
I have had no end of trouble withdrawing money form tye American sites Pokerstars and Full-Tilt:mad:

Can you elaborate a little about the problem Absolute Poker had? :) Cheers for the heads up about Ladbrokes, I'll give it a whirl. I'm not playing cash games yet, but I intend to sometime later in the year.

Absolute have had a string of issues, i'd avoid it IMO.

No matter where you go (I prefer Full Tilt), get rakeback before you sign up. This means you'll get a % of the money raked (Tax for the house) from each pot back monthly/weekly.

I find joining the play money tournaments on PokerStars to be a little better than the random tables. A little slower paced, and if anyone is being an idiot (constant all-ins, etc.), just resist the temptation to call 'em. Fold every time, and they'll eventually take themselves out.

Euuuurrrggggghhhh Online Poker :o

I used to play a lot of Poker and especially online at Pokerstars.... The cycle would be fairly uniform... I would put 30 quid on or so, and have a few games... I would get a bit of success, and the bug would bite... I would become obsessed with the idea of jacking in my job and turning pro... Three weeks later I would find myself playing 6-8 hours a day (including at work - bosses weren't amused), ignoring my lovely girlfriend, and generally becoming an irritated pot odds calculator....

A few years ago it was revealed that some of their players had what i think they called 'super user accounts' where the player could see everyones cards.
I think there is a video where one of the professionals on there played a tournament being able to see all the cards. Maybe Phil Hellmuth did it as well, i seem to remember his name being attatched.
Everyone avoided Absolute poker after that for a long time
