Head vs heart?

Just wondered if many of you guys on here have ever been in the head vs heart situation when it comes to cars?

I'll explain, start my graduate job at Honda as an engineer in market quality in July so obviously want myself a nice bit of Honda action, even more so due to being a jap car nutter (mx5 mk2 and a turbo mx5 mk1). Budget of around £3.5k so have been looking at UK ITR dc2s, EG6/EK4 VTIs and a few EP3 CTRs.

This is where the problem comes, I can either buy a perfect example of the EG6 or EK4 or a rough EP3/DC2. My head says buy the newer car, it's bound to be more reliable in the long run, but then I go and find this:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2710864.htm

Been offered it for £3.5k with standard rims, no cage and the standard steering wheels. Possibly one of the best condition EG's in the country but is still a lot of money for an old car.

Then going on gumtree/ph etc I can find an EP3 with 80k+ miles for a similar price. Which I'm sure deep down is the sensible option!

Apologies if this is a bit of a rambling post, just really can't make a decision but need to get a car on the ASAP!

Please share any similar experiences you've had!

Cheers

Alex

Buy full fat, semi skimmed doesnt taste the same.

DC2/EK9>EK4

where you getting the job too? Langley/Swindon/Avonmouth/Southhampton etc?

Iv had this heat v heart dilemma all my life, thats why im on the 3rd wife :D

Cheers for the response. Starting in Swindon, absolutley can't wait but according to the HR pack I can't get on the car scheme untill I've been there 3 years :(

Fully appreciace the EK9/DC2>ek4 etc. But that's the appeal of the above eg6 as I love the looks but also has the power of the DC2.

Also aggree that this applies to the special ladies in our lives haha!

Cheers

You're really not too far off a good EP3 Type-R. Personally i'd beg, borrow, and steal for one of those. :)

common as muck though :-(

Yes common, but thats because they are a great car and still look quite fresh today. The car you linked to, 99% of people on the street will think you are driving an old banger, and laugh at you when you told them you've paid 3.5k for it!

I really don't get this 'I work for XXXX car company so I must have a car made by them' thing in the trade. It seems to be pretty common. Fair enough if it is a company car but letting 'brand pride' force your own wallet is a bit weird to me.

As for the head vs heart thing - Life is too short. Follow your heart until you can't afford to follow it no more :). A lot of people will call you mental (like me for wanting to spend £3,500 on a old Honda civic!) but to me it is better to do it and deal with whatever fallout comes your way afterwards than sitting there and wondering 'What if'.

You seem to be hung up massively on what other people think about your car choice, very odd.

B18'd EG Civic = serious fun.

Cheers for the response. Starting in Swindon, absolutley can't wait

you want to hope they are open, from what I heard last week, product has been almost stopped due to a lack of parts because of the earthquake, it due to reopen on June 6th, its really bad here at Avonmouth, lots of agency staff let go, and a lack of bits to do anything.

Just buy a ruddy DC2.

Those civics look old and are either driven by old biddies or a certain ethnic minority liek they are racing cars ;)

Also look at the cage next to those silly old fabric seats.

See the shameless Integra Pimpage below, much better :D:D:D

Got your seat tilted far enough back -Ad-?:p

I still prefer the front end of the ukdm DC2 to the jdm, my brothers was awesome. jdm manifold and cat back and you're sorted.

Crap pic, it's the only one I can find of them together.

See the trouble is both arguements make complete sense. Deep down though I've always liked the kind of un-expected performance. That's the reason I got the turbo mx5, I mean yes it may look a sports car but people think it's slow however with the turbo it's a rocket.

Thus, it would be a similar situation with the B18c'd EG as in most people would think it's a shonky old J reg civic and then parp themselves when it comes blazing past in a fit of revs. I think my main hitch is that I'm not sure I want to spend that much on such an old car etc. However looking around 3.5k doesn't get me a that good integra or EP3.

Either way, best quote thus far is £1080 for the EG6, got to try Brentacre tomorrow and Sky to see if they can beat it. To put it into perspective my other quotes are:
Ep3: £851
DC2 UK: £770
EG6 VTI UK: £707
DC2 JDM: £1100

Finally, for the person asking about brand loyalty. Partly I love jap cars and no matter what grad job I landed, I was always going to be going down the honda/nissan/toyota route. Secondly I think it's a kind of pride about the company and finally, what better support network if something goes wrong than the people that designed and built the car?

Cheers

Alex
