new trick from a virus,

Having not had anything for over 2 years I'm now finding the adverts on sites like Break or Piratebay etc are full of malware. Had 2 attacks in about 2 weeks, 1st one was a Fake Windows Security Centre and then a fake Windows Recovery (made 'All' files hidden) so I've swapped from IE8/9 (which until then I had no problem with) for firefox so I can use Adblock+ and haven't had an issue since.

I'd be formatting every 2 days then.

You suck. Maybe you need to format if they're... coming back... every 2 days :p

I dont have any antivirus installed, and havent for yearssss. And in all that time I have got....0 viruses.

As long as you're not downloading random unknown stuff, then you really shouldnt be getting any sort of virueses tbh.

People actually remove viruses? Back up your important files and format.

Yeah, and waste 2 days moving over all the app data, favs, documents, pictures, reinstalling 130+ games, etcetc...

I don't get it, formatting & reinstalling is FAR more effort than a good AV removing some crud of your pc...

That's implying people have so many games to reinstall and that they don't have a data partition. ;)

last time I reinstalled it actually took less time than my last AV scan :p

Go on then, i'll bite :).... How do you know you dont have a virus?

Well if you wanted to you could use something like ClamAV portable which can scan files for a virus without having AV installed.... But I see your point, it's pretty easy to have a virus on your system without knowing about it if you dont' have any AV installed... :)

130 games? They must be crappy games if you need to keep buying more!

I have my massive collection of 3 games (CS, Quake1 & 3), all my coding crap, my pictures and video all on one partition as well as having them backed up onto a separate drive.

Formatting for me is simply a case of backing up my /downloads/, /received files/, browser bookmarks and crap on my desktop.

I choose to have a much faster computer without an anti-virus. It seems to be working well... and has been a great number of years.

Excuse me?!!! :)

If you were paying to have your pc fixed would you want the " I think its clean now and should be ok" or " Its def sorted now and will run as good as new"

Have had customers who have had a quick fix removal and run into problems months later so i see it as a sure fix rather than a patch up.

As i said most of the pcs are already running really slow due to age of os install so a reinstall makes a world of difference to their "old" pc

And its actually more work for me as i still clean the hard drive first before backing it up and installing.

Not lazy mate trust me....how many installs do you do a week?

Done three today and thats my day off :)

I am sure there are others that would agree with me on this? :):)
GTFO people pay you to fix their problems and all you do is format and reinstall because you are not competent enough to actually remove a virus and perform a bit of maintanence on an OS....

os dont get slower with age since windows 2k/xp

there are many tools available which can use like hijackthis if you were any good you could look at a hijackthislog and spot any nasties very quickly and if removing some virus breaks the operating you do realise theres a way to reinstall windows but with windows keeping all of your folders/programs and settings etc.... youve been able to do this since atleast windows 2k

most people have windows XP or vista so a reinstall will speed up the machine... only 1 in 10 machines I see have W7

If I did reinstall I would never consider keeping the old programs / settings.

agreed you dont need to reinstall to get shot of 99% of virus' but in a lot of cases there is a benefit to doing it...

Ghost image of system at a decent state with all apps installed = win (ok, updates may take some time but nvm).

Also if you're that paranoid, use something like sandboxie?

My ex was a nightmare for falling for the dodgy banners, I used to make her do all her browsing in a VM so I could just restore it whenever she messed up.

I've had several machines with this - scared me aswell - do not connect any form of storage to an infected pc as it hides those files aswell, infact, they were 'hidden' and 'read only'. It also locked me out of administative rights so couldn't use task manager.

Malwarebytes dealt with it and then backed up the files and clean imaged to be certain.

With advanced tools like hijackthis and combofix(The advanced side) in conjunction with LSP-fix(winsock tool) you can pretty much clean a computer and know EXACTLY what is running.

Fresh installs are for corruption caused by viruses. Using a fresh install to remove a virus is just overkill. like nuking a city to get to the assassin.

You'll find many IT companies remimage machines rather than waste time trying to fix them. Why spend an hour or 4 running scans and hoping you've removed every trace of a virus when you can image it in 30 minutes and the client ends up with a faster machine?

You're our version of a clueless customer ;)

Thats companies though to be fair. Where policies are in place to keep all work saved on network storage, and the machines have bog standard applications. Windows + Bespoke software and Office tools. Image would just replace all those, Home computers are a completely different beast for most.
