hi, i have just acquired an old pc i built years ago.

spec:
pentium d 820
asrock 775twins-hdtv
2x1gb samsung ddr2 553

it was very tempermental when i got it back and wouldnt turn on. but eventually it came alive. anyway i tried to install windows 7 but it kept restarting during the setup after copying the first files when booting from the disc. i finally managed to get it to install but now it restarts after about 20-30 secs waiting at the logo.

i have done 2 hdd tests and it passed both.
i also replaced the psu and it starts up no problem, i also reseated the cpu with new paste and its running at 30c. i did memtest for 10mins with no errors.

i would just like some ideas at what you think it could be.

Faulty RAM or wrong RAM settings.

Memtest for 10 minutes isn't going to tell you anything.

Try booting with one stick at a time and try different memory slots.

Make sure memory timings etc. are correct in the BIOS.

Also try going up a notch on CPU volts, if memory tests ok, is your memory voltage right check to see what it is and adjust if need be.

sorry forgot to put that i tried each stick seperate and got the same result. I will check the timings tomorrow and see if it helps.

ok, so I setup the ram settings, tried the install of win 7. it was slow to start but when it got to the hdd selection I had to download drivers for it to find the drive, which previously it had done it self. so then I chose to wipe the drive and format it ( i didnt do this last time) and it created a 100mb partition for itself (which didnt happen last time) and then went sort of ok through the setup.

and now it seems to be ok. bit of a barsteward really seeing as I ordered new bits thinking it was caput. o well another new pc to build :D
