Some schools finished for Easter a couple of weeks back meaning that they'll go back the day after Easter Monday - really daft planning if you ask me! Thankfully I finished for Easter on Friday :D

I'll probably watch the wedding on TV - not all the build-up to it, but the actual service I probably will.

There is quite a build-up but the service isn't very long:

• Between 8.15am and 9.45am: The general congregation will arrive at the Great North Door of Westminster Abbey.
• From 9.50am: Governors-General and Prime Ministers of Realm Countries, the Diplomatic Corps, and other distinguished guests arrive at the Abbey.
• 10.10am The Bridegroom and Prince Henry of Wales leave Clarence House for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.15am.
• 10.20am Members of Foreign Royal Families arrive at Westminster Abbey from Buckingham Palace.
• 10.20am Mrs. Michael (Carole) Middleton and Mr. James Middleton leave the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.27am.
• 10.25am Members of the Royal Family (except those listed below) leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.30am.
• 10.35am The following Members of the Royal Family leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.40am:
- The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence
- The Duke of York
- Princess Eugenie of York
- Princess Beatrice of York
- The Earl and Countess of Wessex
• 10.38am The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall leave Clarence House for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.42am.
• 10.40am The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.45am.
• 10.48am The Bridesmaids and Pages leave the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey. They arrive at the Abbey at 10.55am.
• 10.51am The Bride, accompanied by Mr. Michael Middleton, leaves the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey.
11.00am The Marriage Service begins. The Marriage Service will be relayed by audio speakers along the Route.
• 12.15pm The Carriage Procession of the Bride and Bridegroom with a Captain’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, followed by The Queen’s Procession with a Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, leaves Westminster Abbey for Buckingham Palace.
• 12.30pm The Bride’s Carriage Procession arrives at Buckingham Palace.
• 12.40pm Members of the Royal Family and Members of Foreign Royal Families arrive at Buckingham Palace.
• From 12.40pm: Other guests for the Reception arrive at Buckingham Palace.
• 1.25pm The Queen and the Bride and Bridegroom, together with their Families, appear on the Balcony.
• 1.30pm Fly Past by the Royal Air Force and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

I'm looking forward to giving the after dinner speech. I think I'll focus most of it on my proposed spec for a new rig for the happy couple. I'll even throw in a copy of Crysis 2.

I think the Royals are a good thing for our country. Once we get rid of the monarchy then we become just another boring EU state. It connects us to our rich history and reminds us of what our country once was and how we came to be.

It'd be a sham if the moronic masses got their bigoted desires and saw them exiled. Throwing away such an important part of our culture and history.

The royal family should have been abolished a long, long time ago. They are a constant waste of public money and represent an archaic system that should by now be part of history.

No, Eggyoke, that doesn't make me part of the 'biggoted masses'. You know what does, however, make you a biggot? Your obviously moronc, uneducated and intollerant opinions on other countries in the EU. Not only that, but our history would not cease to be if they were taken from power and thinking it would is laughable.

Haha :D

What about the huge amount of money brought in via tourism?

As soon as I posted that I knew somebody would mention that. Lets put it in to perspective:

The royal family costs us £41.5m/year. The royal wedding itself is costing $48m. In addition to that the additional public holiday will supposedly cost the country around $10/bn, although I'm not really sure where the site I'm reading gets that figure from.

Regardless, they are all very substantial sums of money. Buckingham Palace only earns around £7m/year in tourism revenue. Even if all of the royal-related tourist attractions pull in more than that per year as a whole, I cannot imagine it is by a substantial amount - Certainly not by enough to justify an utterly undemocratic head of state and an entirely outdated system of privelage.

Royal pain tbh. I give it 5 years tops.

Although I do think they should ditch Parliament and give the country to Harry to run for a bit. Liz should have stepped in on Brown ... screw the resulting constitutional crysis.

In reality though it's more than just how much royal tourist attractions pull in. I'm sure numorous tourists visit London/Britain because of the monarchy, but don't necessarily visit these attactions, so it's pretty hard to say how much income the royals bring in via tourism as a whole.

Its hard to find a figure, I agree - I actually tried for a while earlier despite not having high hopes. I dont agree that people come to this country to simply see the monarchy though, and if they did they would most certainly go to the associated attractions. Regardless, if the royal family was abolished these attractions would still exist, as would the associated history - People/tourists could still visit Buckingham Palace etc., just like you can visit the Mary Rose or whatever other historic attractions this country has.

Oddly enough, today was the first time I've heard of this. Mind you, I only listen to local news on my way to work and never watch television, so I am kind of sheltered in that sense. The only reason I heard of it today was because they announced that Kate Middleton has now eclipsed Princess Diana as the most talked-about woman in the world. I was like, "who?" :o

.

What about the money from the Crown Estates? That goes directly into the treasury. If you abolish the monarchy then those estates should by rights return to the monarch as they are held in trust in return for the civil list.

Fine, let them pay for the upkeep of them.
