Doesn't change that it was included as part of the entire marketing strategy. The whole reboot system + potato sack strategy wouldn't have been carried out unless valve thought it would sell on the premise of people wanting to contribute towards early release. It was a marketing strategy, thus created for the intent purpose of generating profit. Plus, the sack sold considerably more after the 'early release' announcement, than it did before it.

All no doubt true. Why is any of this a surprise?

Valve is a company, y'know?

Already had audiosurf and defense grid.
HAd Audiosurf running int he background, cba to run DG as it means installing it again :p

Once this had been pointed out to me tho I preordered Portal 2 xD

source?

AS valve don't release sales data i'm curious how you decided that?

None of it a surprise, but some people on here come out guns blazing when you even hint at the fact that valve should do such a thing as try and market a lot of games people previously haven't been particularly interested in - and shock horror! people buy into it.

To these people, this simply does not and has not happened.

I can only go off their top sellers board of course. Before the 'early release' announcement it was 6-7-8th in the top sellers. Within several hours of the announcement it had shot up to 2nd-3rd.

no people are doubting theses supposed droves of incredibly desperate or stupid people buying the games in the last day or two just to get portal released.

sure valve would love them too, but i just don't think there are that many retards with a credit card and know what steam is.

Consider all the people who buy into games such as blackops hailing, "IT WILL BE DIFFERENT THIS TIME!", and the thought of lots of people buying into the huge portal 2 marketing and hype generated by valve and the community seems entirely plausible.

How about the people that will spend an extra 30+ quid on special edition boxes in which they recieve half a soundtrack, a concept art book and a pants toy - the prospect of instead spending that extra 30 quid on 10 or so games and getting an early release is probably highly tempting to them.

Hardly anyone is disputing that it's not a big marketing push.

Most of the backlash comes from the people who joined the various ARG discussions with super-negative comments about popele buying the pack. The general reaction was that most people were enjoying the potato sack games and the fact it helped release P2 earlier was a great bonus but not the only factor.

Has it helped push quite a few people into buying the pack when they might have been on the fence before? Of course it has. But that doesn't make it a bad thing or make those people stupid.

In marketing speak it's called "adding value" and it happens all the time in supermarkets!

i had the ones i wanted so didnt bother with the whoel pack.
as for people saying theyre conning people, i just dont get that at all, you could gift the multiple games onto others and i thought it was a great way to release a game tbh (portal2)

would love for you to find me a post where someone has said valve are conning people.

Nope, didn't buy, don't have the spare cash to waste on games atm, I'll wait till its price is knocked off a lot or I'll play it at a mate.

Maybe you didn't but there was a few comments over the weekend like "pathetic charade" and "big scam" so you can understand why people get a little defensive.

Way worse on other forums. OcUK is so polite compared to the pool of radioactive cess that is other gaming forums! :)

I don't see why any body would see the need to buy the pack anyways to get Portal 2 early? O.o Surely just you alone wouldn't want to do anything and I bet if there wasn't enough initial sales for Valve to sort out the reboot timer they wouldn't of bothered doing it/the whole process would have been speeded up. I was very tempted to buy the pack to get the 36 potatoes as I wanted to see what the surprise would be but also wouldn't mind half the games in that pack tbh!

Yay for Valve, I think it's awesome what they are doing for marketing as it isn't really marketing at the end of the day is it? I mean they are just adertising to all the people who pre-ordered who are deeply anticipating the game so they have given you an option of killing some time until release rather than "HEY 1 MILLION LIKES ON FACEBOOK = DIRECTORY COMMENTARY FROM GLADOS ON 30 SECONDS TRAILER!!!!!" that other companies are doing.

Valve are doing it for the fans making those last few days of waiting far less painful and enjoyable, think of it as the game was released over 2 weeks ago when the ARG began.
