Just read this article and wondered what people's opinions were about exercising in the early morning?

I'm currently on a 3 day split and get to gym around 5:30am to 7am (Mon-Wed-Fri) and feel I am getting on quite well but have heard quite a few people discussing the negatives of excercising early.

Occasionally I find a drop in energy (particularly when doing squats!) but overall I haven't found any negative effects.

Interested to know your thoughts (sorry if this has been asked before!)

Personally I don't get on too well with it. I prefer to have a good 10 hours of eating behind me before I set foot in the gym.

I guess it may depend on what your aim is... its meant to be better to do exercise in the morning before your first meal if you want to concentrate on fat burning.

Personally I CBA running etc after work as I feel more tired than in the morning.

Fasted cardio in the morning, usually 15-20mins moderate to high intensity (sod doing low intensity steady state stuff for 45mins-1hr zzzzz). Resistance stuff in the evening.

I do fasted cardio 4 times a week for 30 minutes and I sleep so much better on those days, but mainly because I'm so knackered by the evenings :(

At the moment I'm swimming 3 times a week at 6:30am-8:00am. I found it hard initially, but that was more to do with the fact that my swimming fitness has been on the wane since I hurt my hip. I've always been an early morning exerciser. It sets you up beautifully for the day ahead.

Quite like it since doing it thanks to IF. However I can train in the evening too. If anything I probably prefer training in the morning as I go in and get it done. Where as I might take a little longer in the afternoon/evening.

If you're training fasted purely for the benefit of burning extra fat then it probably isn't going to help much. If anything carbs before a workout won't be detrimental to fat burning at all if you're well trained and training with a moderate to high intensity, they'll just provide more energy so you can go for longer.

Never been good with weights in the morning. Can do an all body workout, light weights etc but nothing that's going to break PBs.

CV on the other hand I can happily munch away a few miles on the treadmill/cross trainer.

Thats all well and good if you want to actually go longer. If I can burn off more by doing CV work fasted** in less time than if I did it non-fasted then thats better for me IMHO.

Its a personal preference.

** research suggests that CV work while fasted can be as much as 300% more effective at burning fat than non-fasted (I can post links if need be)

I'd quite like to see these links if you have them handy. I was under the same impression until I started to look into it more thoroughly, Alan Aragon pretty much changed my mind in a short series of articles about fat burning and cardio.
