how does a reinstall protect someone from getting viruses for 2 years? most of them are from clicking/downloading something they shouldnt...

your trying to claim someone who properly removes an infection and secures the computer is doing a half assed job and they would likely get a virus within a few months and blame you which is BS

this kind of ridiculous argument is why you are not worth my time. do you even know how to check a hijackthis log? or only how to install malwarebytes and avast...

I haven't mentioned anywhere about the length of time it takes to run a virus scan? You either are so ignorant that you are unable to read properly or you are taking someone elses comments just to fit into your poorly constructed arguement with me.

For your information I have a number of qualifications including MCDST, whereas you have proven here that you know chuff all about computers and even less again about running a business, although this hasn't stopped you spouting your rubbish.

For your information, I probably could spend a few days looking through registry entries, looking for suspicious files, comparing them with the correct file sizes of another computer, but why should I?

If your car stops working and the coil pack is gone, do you replace it or do you spend days repairing it, knowing it will likely go again?

Saying that though, you are just as opinionated and useless in the motors section too, calling all mechanics monkeys who don't have a clue.

So what do you do for a living then? You either have a lot of skills or are as we suspect an opinionated, ignorant troll.

When i said 2 years i meant that it will run at a decent speed ofr about 2 years before needing reinstalled again...thats what i find in my experience (which i know you will ignore)

Removing it wouldnt mean they would get a virus again in a few months but you couldnt be 100% sure it was all gone a sorted...wheras a fresh install sorts it all...and i mean 100% as in bet ur kids life on it as opposed to the mates "yeah i am sure it will be ok....."

Curious to know what rig ur running....prob an alienware as more money than sense :)

I get up to things that will get me suspended if I talk about it but badcompany may have a solution for my problems.

We charge £168 for a rebuild. That includes applications the client requires, joining domain, printer setup etc. £224 if there's data recovery. If they want it cleaned it's £86 an hour or £112 an hour if onsite - it soon works out cheaper to reimage the machine!

Couldnt charge that here to be honest. Would price myself out of the market.

£55 for a reinstall and £25/hr on site gets me plenty of work and i dont feel bad about overcharging....though i am sure somebody would disagree....
 
Personally if it was my machine it would be reinstalled without a 2nd thought. I'd never be able to trust the machine again otherwise, no matter how good I think my virus removal skills are.
 
Have been laughing at the squabbling in this thread. Makes it even better as no one's opinion is any more right or wrong than the other. How you fix a PC is completely down to you and the wishes of the owner.

As much of a complete and utter numpty arknor is, he is not wrong to suggest you should try and preserve the OS. Very few viruses will be so ingrained you can't get rid. Plus, your average Joe is a bloody genius at losing install media and product keys and probably wouldn't be thrilled about losing their software and settings.

On the flip side, if you are willing to put in the work recovering product keys, game saves, settings, documents and anything else important, then by all means reformat. I have done this in the past.

My own personal PCs are imaged daily, with important documents also backed up separately. On the few occasions where I have had a lurgy on my computer I have been able to remove it without a restore. Though if one did prove difficult I can restore my PC to how it was less than 24 hours earlier and all documents will be current.
