Cray desktops

When I've ever thought the cost of my perfect rig, for example:

A dual cpu socket motherboard
Intel's two best CPUs
Quad 580 SLI
1500+w PSU
48 GB of RAM
18 GB of HDD storage
1 GB of SSD storage

Even if it was watercooled, would never come anywhere close to even a fraction of the lowest end model of those computers.

I thunk you have to buy it fron Dell???
Fair enough about the different market. You never know, ocuk may have just started supercomputers!
My point still stands. Its dell. Its ****.

Oh and supposedly the difference between the mid and high end specs are 7 grand for a bit of overclocking and a slightly newer model quadro card.

who in their right mind would pay tht much for whats in them?

You really don't understand the market they're aimed at so perhaps it is best you keep your ignorance to yourself! :D

These aren't for "maxing out Crysis" you know?

Oh and Dell aren't bad. We have thousands of them here at work and not many go wrong and the support is first class.

Dell are excellent on the support front and are good with business clients. However, the day you are out of warranty, they just screw around with you. they charge £1 perminute if you call them and are out of warranty.

I say Dell are **** because they always make ridiculous cutbacks on their gaming machines. eg, the XPX 420, they take out Pcie slots, use non standard parts, add stupid things to their components to make them unique

You might want a bit more than 19GB of storage.

manufacturers are wasting their time making these high end PC's for people who know what their doing, do they honestly think a company will fork out 35K on that and not know what the spec for the thing even is? im only 15 but im right in guessing most companys have their own tech depo who deal with this rubbish right? and im sure they're just like us, who actually know what we are on about...

and does anyone here own an alienware desktop by any chance?

only solution for them is to sell them at reasonable prices... ohh, and its the same for macs...

Yeah but that's not much different from HP and Lenovo. Most people I know with Dell home PCs are happy with them. They're aren't enthusiasts though!

I'm struggling to decipher what you are trying to say but I think you are trying to say a companies IT department should build a computer to do the same job as the Cray.

Ain't going to happen. For starters a off the shelf made from consumer parts computer won't be even close to what that Cray desktop is designed to do and it sure as hell won't have the business support (from Dell/Cray) behind it.

When are school holidays over?

Seems like an interesting idea if you need some serious hoursepower. Im thinking rendering or simulations or something similar. Putting a name like Cray on it seems like a smart move as well. Im sure there is a business need for them somewhere

i know that but they are still probably overpriced for whats is in them, thats all i was getting at

They aren't really that bad value.

You also need to remember that you are not just buying the product when you buy Dell.
