I've finally hit that point - Seeing the amazing special on the XMS ram today has got me ready to press purchase.

I'm sitting on the edge of my seat in excitment

I have two coolers on there at present because I can't decide if I actually need the H-50.
What do you think???

General spec check as well to make sure I haven't missed anything or should change anything around.

Main use of machine will be gaming with occasional photo/video editing

I have a quality PSU already

Hoping for some quick replies so I can press purchase.

you missed out a harddrive! (unless you only need about 40gb)
I would personally get a GTX 480 over the 6950 as it is faster and quieter.
As for the cooler, THIS would be better. THIS is also good.

You don't need a h50 and the a50 for that price is good value. The ram is a good price as will. Go with the a50 but if you would prefer a quieter build get the h50.

Whoops - forgot to mention I have plenty of HDD's sitting around - couple of 1TB's and a 500 for all the Data.

Wasn't sure if I should spend a little extra and get one of the 120 gig SDD
I noticed that the one I chose has faster read/write speeds - will it be a big improvement over the 120gig one???

Looking at the differnt coolers now...

I would get the 120gb. You won't notice the difference.

The 6950 if unlocked and overclocked is faster than a 480, specially at high resolutions.

The 6950 is also quieter unless you get a non reference edition which are more expensive than a 6950.

I was talking about a GTX480 SOC. It is faster out of the box and it is quieter.

It is also more expensive though :)

And there are some reliability issues with them... high rate of DOA and RMAs or so I have read.

I was having a good look at the 480 SOC the other day when it was on special and much closer in price to the 6950 - but I decided upon the 6950 and will unlock it to 6970.

Also saw the high rate of returns, Gibbo was saying about 30 returns from 300 if I remember right to date.

Happy with 6950 anyway, have been going back and forward so much over it I think both cards would rock.

The scythe ninja 3 looks good (Except for it's absolutly massive size) but If i'm getting up to around £40 would it not then be worth spending another £10 and getting the H50??? or are the cooling temps and quietness fairly close between these units??

very close. ot realy worth it.

BTW, the ninja is pretty difficult to install. get a friend to help and be careful not to cut yourself by high fiving the fins:(

Yup, I'd go with that, the difference would be almost unnoticeable for general purpose (which is what a OS drive is used for), certainly compared to a SSD vs HDD. Double capacity will certainly make a much bigger difference. They do need a bit more maintanance and care as thier garbage collection isnt as sophisticated as the Sandforce.

Heh, I bought the RAM today as well!

For my brother's build.

And you'll be happy with just a OC'ed 6950. The performance difference between OC and Unlocked & OC'ed is unnoticeable (literally 2-3 FPS increase).

And I hope you have HDD storage already. Photoshoping and video editing will quickly eat away the space no matter how 'occasional' it is. I've got 1tb and 500gb internal. And 2x1.5tb externals. I'm planning on buying another 1tb internal.

great looking spec son..

Few suggestions:

  • Swap the 6950 for a GTX 480 SOC - The SOC runs on par with the GTX 580
  • Buy a HDD - 7200 RPM
  • Why do you have 2 CPU coolers..?

Agree that the Akasa venom is a good buy.
Disgree with the notion that a 480 is quieter than a 6950.

Get the 6950, unlock shaders, profit.
Even at stock the 6950 will be good enough, and will consume less power and be quieter than the 480.

You need another Hard drive unless you only need 40gbs of space!!!
