Do you talk to the person next to you on the plane?

Just randomly curious, I would generally talk to the person next to me in order to pass the time and frankly its always fun to meet someone new. However the odd time if I am hungover, extremely fatigued, just in a kack mood I will leave it. This got me thinking that although I regularly start up convos, I have never ever had someone strike up a convo with me - is it considered bad etiquette to do so?

I always get the one wants to read my magazine, then i end up looking at them to see if they are ready to turn the page, very irritating.

Depends on the person. No harm in starting a conversation. If they aren't interested in chatting, their enthusiam and body language will give that away and you can stop.

Yes, all the time. It passes the time, get to hear interesting stories, tips about where you are going and just have a nice time.

On a flight back from Russia to Glasgow, I spoke to the people beside and infront of me. We ended up getting a bit tipsy and me and one of the girls went out that night and then she came home with me. One step closer to The Mile High!

Sometime. Depends what kind of person they are.

Fight to America I was sitting next to a little hottie who was flying back to Miami. Had a chat but she wanted to sleep as it was a connecting flight. So I mostly just perved on her while she slept. No touching though :P

On the way back I was sat next to a 72 year old Irish chap who didn't stop talking. He's one of those guys you would pay just to shut up. Constantly moaning about his seat and everything else about the flight. I tried to watch a film and sleep but he was relentless.

If it's a stranger then I'll usually strike up something.
If it's my girlfriend/family then I usually won't bother.

Should have told him to shut the **** up, there's no helping them ones.

Most of the time yes, unless it's a kid, I hate kids on planes! IF they look annoying then i make sure i get my headphones on before they have a chance to say anything!

Not really....ive had a few people strike up a convo with me whilst flying and of course i engage them but usually i keep myself to myself.

I normally do - Not for whole journey eg start and end!

Last time I chatted to someone on the plane I kinda got a bit scared tho... was travelling from Middle east. The guy next to me looked very uneasy so started to chat to him. He started off telling me he was travelling alone, then an hour later his whole family was on the plane etc. He started to mess with his insoles of his shoes for 10 mins then dissapired into the tolet for another 10 mins - looking around a lot before he entered it.

I really thougt I was going to die lol

Not unless she is good looking.

My brother (god bless his soul) got stuck in the middle of a big bloke and a big woman on a long haul flight to Australia, both of them fell asleep, and one of them kept drooping their head and resting it on my brother.

lol

My worst experience was sitting next to a nervous flyer! I actually had to hold some lady's hand while we took off/landed and every time there was the slightest bit of turbulence she'd get all freaked out! Thank god it was only a 1:30 hour flight!

I do try to, but I've had a run of bad luck - perhaps just by chance sitting with people who aren't "my sort of person"

Last long haul was to Malaysia.

On the way had some proper miserable bitch who had the window seat, and myself and the irish lass had the two seats nearest the aisle. Anyway this cretin chucked on her pirates eye patch thing, and ear plugs 10 minutes after sitting down and appeared to want to sleep. Fair enough you'd think. However, the crew served a meal not 10 minutes later and the air hostess asked me to give the woman a tap to see if she wanted her meal. Doing so enraged the slumbering dragon and she went off on one.

Fair enough she wanted to sleep but she had to be offered her meal or she probably would have had an eppy, failing that she should have told us she didnt want any meals and not to be disturbed.

Of course that didn't stop her nudging me when she needed the loo when we were both asleep.

On the way back, I thought we'd done better but instead we got an australian bloke who was trying to encroach in my leg area (I'm 6'3'' and need all the room I can get). Worse was he brought his own DVD player and proceeded to laugh out loud very loudly at the movies he'd brought with him, even when we were sleeping.

Other bad flights I've had included one next to a fatty who was literally holding himself in, and a lady who stunk of BO - also on the way to Malaysia although about 10 years ago.

Best time was when on a flight to Ireland, I sat next to a rather appealing young lady who was a presenter for Sky covering the European Drift Championship. Bonza.
