Hi guys. I am doing a BEng/MEng degree at Leeds uni and was wondering if there are any fellow chem engers out there (not necessarily from Leeds).

Cheers,

Dave

Ah nice. Which industry you going into? I'm thinking the oli/gas but some speciality chemical ones look good. Had a rep from Mars and tht looked good (esp free samples :) ).

My sister went there and did the same course. She felt that, as an undergraduate, they were there to fund the universities own postgraduate research. She felt that she didn't get enough support through her degree.
Make sure to get involved in Frank Morton. It's really fun!!

Yojimbo01 will you consider the nuclear industry? It's an industry which is crying out for engineers. It's estimated that the industry would need a 1000 new graduates each year over the next 15 years to fill the skills shortage.

I work in the civil nuclear side, in the power generation industry. It's a great place to be, especially as the country is starting to build new reactors, and decommision old ones.

I'm in oil and gas, started working in September.

Mars is a good company to work for (or so I've heard), pharmaceuticals industry is good (although some like it more than others), nuclear is also deffo worth looking at. There's loads tbh - have a look at www.gradcrackercom.

I'm probably a bit biased, but you can't ignore the oil and gas industry. The best paying sector on average (although they'll always be exceptions), huge variety of roles, work is generally interesting, possibility to travel etc etc.

Lots of Chem Engers here on OcUK for some reason!

This I think needs to be repeated. Some courses offer some nuclear engineering elements as options or part of the core. I did my undergrad (MEng, graduated last year) at Sheffield and we did Nuclear Engineering as part of the course. Really interesting and gives you that bit extra in terms of choice at the end.

One of my classmates went to work at Sellafield, and one finished a placement year and has been offered a graduate job there when she graduates this year. Nuclear looks like it's going to be a big employer for engineers, so don't just think chem eng = oil and gas!

Apparently after the right experience in the oil and gas industry you can do rather well in energy trading.

Search Andrew J Hall - he had a $100 million bonus during the credit crunch, Citi had to sell its energy arm before Obama's pay Czar asked too many questions.

Well so glad to see many good ocuk people in the chem eng field. Nuclear also is a good idea that we have been told. From what the SONG group have told me on the ICHEME student group website, oil and gas is a lucrative area and one not to be ignored. However I have to get some mass balances/fluid mechanics done before I understand wth is going on (and they said first years are fun!!?).

Who are you starting with?

I'm employed by a small engineering consultancy firm called Kelton, but immediately was contracted out to work for Centrica in Windsor (covering someone on maternity leave). Come September time I'll most likely move up to Aberdeen, probably still being contracted out to Centrica.

Ah good old Aberdeen, good luck with that i hate spending any length of time in that place.

Not a Chemical Engineer myself but i'm surrounded by them.

Was up for 2 weeks lastime, had a cracking view of the River from my Apartment however it snowed, was cold, rained and the whole place is built out of grey stone.

It's easy to see why the scots drink so much :p

Everytime I've been I've quite enjoyed it :p

Also got a couple of mates who moved up there from down south a while back and they actually quite enjoy it! Guessing time will tell if I do.

Does get cold there, during the cold snap this winter my mates car red -15 deg C one morning

It's ok, the real perks of the industry is being flown all over the world to do work, that's why i'd always pick a job in the Oil & Gas sector over Nuclear, plus the Nuclear work is harder :p

It does get pretty depressing during the winter though, especially when all the granite buildings match perfectly with miserable gray sky.

It can be pretty nice in the summer though, it's been pretty nice the past few days as well and it's a pretty small city, so it does have its faults, but overall there's far worse places to be :p.

Maybe a different point of view considering I'm a student though!

Yes, Basildon. Lived there on placement, right hole....Aberdeen may not be the best place in the UK to live, but it's hardly anywhere near the worst either.
