Boats with engines in this case. :)

I've been toying with the idea for a while, in this case on the Thames. When we were young we used to have a RIB with a (what to me at the time) seemed a bloody great Mercury 40hp outboard on the back. That progressed to a open cabin "day boat" (with the same motor) BonwitcoWhich got used for blatting up and down the Thames as well as on the south coast going fishing for Herring. Once you pass Wandsworth bridge on the Thames there's no speed limit and hammering through central London on the RiB was fantastic. The scenery and history you see from the river in the middle of London is exceptional - few ever see the capital from that view point.

My problem is these days I'm frankly too lazy for the whole trailer thing, carting the boat to a lip way, getting it in only to find the motor won't start and 101 other bits that go with it.

With a young family now however the fond memories are still there and I'd love to get a day boat with a few luxuries (in this case at least an enclosed cabin, toilet and cooking rings), something around 24ft maybe. The real thing holding me back is mooring fees. On the mid Thames above Teddington Lock at least they're going to be around £3k per year, which whilst making for easy "jump in and go" days out, is just that little bit too much to justify in my head.

Anyone got/had/looking at a family "day" boat have any experience, tips or recommendations to share?

I have a little inflatable at a river club in thames ditton, not a day boat by any means just something to row or putter about in (mostly used to cross the river to walk the dogs on the other side!). Personally for my use on the thames I don't particularly want much more. I have a decent day boat elsewhere which I share with a couple of mates (24 foot sea ray with a 350 mercruiser in it) but wouldn't particularly get the use of it on the thames. In that instance though splitting mooring fees and maintenance costs between 3 of us is a winner. Any mates you would consider going in with?

Hmmm, good point...

Maybe something lightweight for pottering around on the Thames is the way to go, let's face it - once you've done a couple of hours up / down stream of the mooring I suspect the novelty wears off quite quickly.

Off to investigate if there's a way of buying a share in something water-borne - narrow boat first on the list :)

by the way I just got the invoice for my fees for the inflatable, £160 ish quid for the year for membership to a small club and trolley storage for a 3.5m long boat (takes me 1 min from walking into the club to launch and there is a winch for bigger boats). Could be an interesting option to look at something like that. People do have some nice rigid hulled boats that could work for you at a location like that with fees in the 100s rather than 1000s. email in trust if you want a link to the club to check out
