Alternative Vote Referendum - May 5th 2011

If people vote for them, they deserve to be properly represented, crazy or not.

They won't be properly represented. In a coalition the minority party gets a massive slice of power, far more than the votes they received. If the main party does not give them this power, then parliament can not achieve anything and we would have to go back to the polls. Exactly like Cameron had to do this election.

Well I've now got my postal vote for this, I still haven't received any propaganda from either the yes or no campaign though so I'm deeply disappointed that they don't seem to care about my vote.

I'm surprised, but impressed that you've linked to this, given that it pretty much knocks down the points of most of those saying no to AV. Summarising, it won't change things that much, the doom mongers are being excessively paranoid and it is likely that one reform will support further reform while a no vote is very likely to kill any further changes.

That last point is the reason most people are giving for voting yes to this change.

Why do you need to be "cared" for? Make your own mind up - it is your referendum and and your electoral system

Because if neither side chooses to get in touch with me personally how can I possibly make any decision?

both sides are propaganda anyway.

Yes they are but for reasons I've already mentioned I'll probably be voting no, I'll give myself a day or two further to think about it though.

You do realise that there aren't any 'sides' other than sides of an argument, and you are being asked to make a personal choice - not join a party?

Normally when deciding which side of an argument you are on, you would do some research - not sit on your arse hoping someone spoon-feeds you what will inevitably be biased propaganda.

Or maybe that is what you do - just like the rest of the country - which is why it can't be trusted to do think for itself. I somehow doubt it, though. You've made it this far on OcUK ;)

Absolute tosh!

AV will be a confusing mess for the majority of folk. It will change the fae of politics, but not in the way that people expect it to. The fringe parties getting a bigger voice is not a good thing...

For example, any slightly sane person who has ever taken the time to read the Green Party manifesto will understand that they are absolutely bat-**** insane, only outdone by groups such as Peta. AV will give them a bigger voice... PR will not (or at least will not to the same extent).

The Lib Dems promised a referendum for PR if they got into power. They've now back-peddled and compromised by settling for AV. Screw that and screw their lying arses.

(Voted Lib Dem and am thoroughly ashamed of it)

The idea that AV will give minority parties a bigger voice is rubbish. The idea that AV would give minority parties a bigger voice than PR would is even more rubbish.

PR is not on the table. There's a straight up choice between AV and FPTP. For me, AV is slightly less flawed than FPTP, so I'll be voting for it.

I didn't actually expect anyone to take my comment there seriously, I haven't been contacted by either campaign although oddly I believe one of my housemates has. As it is I've done a certain amount of research into the various (de)merits of the voting systems and don't believe AV offers enough of a benefit to vote for it but I've still got a little bit of time before I absolutely have to send it off so I'll still check to see if anything gives me pause.

In my everyday life I haven’t heard one person mention the Alternative Vote Referendum hence I get the feeling no cares.

Tempted to vote no, because in the scheme of thing it’s insignificant and a waste of money. No one cares; I can’t believe were having a referendum over this. If people cared, it would be talked about all the time.

That's mainly down to so many people being apathetic towards politics in general, possibly due the fact that it's current state means their vote is often worthless or that they just vote based on family tradition without actually looking in to anything.

The expenditure is on the referendum, which will be paid regardless of the result.

Easier not to bother with a referendum and keep it how it is tbh.

A very small percentage of people actually seem to care from what ive seen. If there was a problem people would be moaning non stop and I haven’t heard a peep from work colleagues, friends, and family. Hence I can’t see the point.

Wont happen, just wont happen

Sensible post (after a few not so sensible one) as above all else it actually explains the importance of AV and its attempt to link the voter with who they are voting for/why they are voting at all (shame its not the best written or sourced article as iv written something like that as an essay in 1st year)

Do fringe parties get a bigger say than they normally would in australia?

also why do the Australians want rid of the system?

Personally I'd like to see a "none of the above" option.

I HATE that every time this voting crap comes up, it's always on the day after my birthday!

The Government can't seriously expect me to go to the polling station with a hangover that could kill a small child can they?
