Do you talk to the person next to you on the plane?

Depends on the person and the length of the flight. Stuck next to a fat old bald guy for an hour long domestic flight? Then probably not... But on a long haul flight you will generally have at least some form of communication at some point. So it just depends how interesting(/hot) they seem I guess.

On my last flight I just plugged in my earphones and watched 10 episodes of 'lost'. :o The funny thing was when you start each episode, they warn you that it contains scenes of planes crashing. :D

Just depends on the person/situation. I find that East/SE-Asian people are generally friendler towards random strangers then Europeans are.

I fly a lot nowadays and I have reached the stage where I force conversation if I have to. More often than not it just happens but I will prize words out of people if it proves difficult!

Most conversations are monumentally boring. It usually involves them telling me about their holidar or business trip then me recounting my story. I have sat beside some very interesting people though. The last time I flew DEN-IAD I got a UDU to First and happened to be sat beside a thoroughly interesting gentleman who had made his career in selling sex toys. He had made his millions and was expanding into the pornography industry, specifically with a view to advertising. Probably one of my most interesting plane conversations ever. I have his card. I'm supposed to call him next time I fly into SFO.

See this is why I sort of force the conversation as well as you never know who you'll end up talking to. Only had three very good meetings - a decent girl on a flight belfast to liverpool, a young australian couple from Dubai to London (the bloke was huge but it was a rough flight and he utterly caked his pants, including boking a lot, his gf was awesome) and an american naval officer on a bejing to bangkok flight. (his mate brought a bottle of whiskey on the plane, got completely smashed and was very loud so was told to be quiet several times by staff, he then took a slash in the kitchen of the plane he was that out of it - they were escorted off the plane by armed police - luckily they got away fine but missed their bus they had already paid for)

Depends really, personally I’m not bothered and don't particularly want to know about some random person quite frankly, I prefer to enter into my own world by either folding my seat flat and ignore everyone except the stewardess who’s bringing me food and drinks, or put on my headphones watch a movie and do some work.

Short flights I might talk to someone next to me, depend what time of day it is.

However i may be forced to speak to others when i make my way to the Emirates Sky Bar and stay sat at it for the duration of my next flight :p

slightly off topic

any of you guys flown with virgin do you happen to know if ipod headphones work in the headphone seat connectors.

save me having to buy theres or are they normally free on there flights?

thanks

I have done. A few years ago I met a couple of cute chatty girls on the plane which was cool. Last time I flew the guy next to me was intent to sit there with his leather jacket on for the full 8 hours, staring at the back of the seat in front with just the splash screen showing on the in-flight entertainment. Pretty sure he didn't watch anything for the whole flight. I amicably mentioned he could turn the screen off if he wanted to but he just grunted and ignored me. I should have upgraded my flight that day :(

Last time i flew with Virgin on a 747 the headphones came pre packed on your seat, along with a blanket and a pillow.

cool , im also flying in a 747 , so that would be good if they are.

can you take ipods aboard flights?

not flew for a while so unsure how strict the flights have got , not that an ipod is a lethal weapon !

When I flew to America the 2 people in front of me where both married but got on like a house on fire, i swear the must have started an affair when out there :P

It isn't like a bus, you are likely sitting next to them for 2 hours+ so I would atleast say "hello".

The rest depends on how cool or hot they are.

So what if the screen was on?

To Germany I sat next to my hot but shacked up friend and had a Asian guy on my other side...half way through the flight he went to the loo and returned with a face mask....and just stared at me!
Way back I sat next to a buisness guy who we chatted a little but very soon it was ipod+book. the isle to my right and forward one had a guy that kept clearing his throat/snorting for 2.5 hours....i nearly hit him!

America was a whole other kettle of fish! way there, in front of me the family had 2 noisy children and kept throwing their seat back, when i commented i got a look of death and she said i was the disruptive/rude one to the air stewardess who sided with me lol, the person next to me was very nice and we had some chit chat but again it was films/ipod/book.
Way back had a family who had taken other peoples seats and the air crew just moved people to fit them in....if it had been my seat i would have gone ape ****!
