Can anyone recommend a 7 seated for my mother? She's doing fostering so needs a larger veichle than the Grand Vitara she has at the moment. Budget is 6k, I have no idea :) thanks.

for 6k, your best bet is a zafira imo, though the ford S-max is considered a better option, but more expensive

Best engine / model to go for?

Most seem to be 1.6 petrols, going to be used locally just running kids around, very little motorway miles.

the 04 2 littre diesel zafira uses the same engine as my diesel vectra. its underpowered in the zafira and not a nice drive.

Anything but a Zafira, hateful cars, just hateful.

You can pick up a reasonable Renault Grand Scenic for under £6k, or might get lucky with a "well loved" Mazda5.

Alternatively there's loads of older Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambras out there, you just need to be careful as at £6k it'll either be a shed or hyper-mileage.

Multipla? the facelift doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the original.

*ninja*
There's lots in budget on AT, but they're only 6 seats apparently.

Zafira are ok for about town useage but they are a bit too cramped for long distance they are a bit of a drag for long distance driving the engine/drive refinement and power is right on the borderline for both aspects, ok but not great.

I still like the VW Sharan even if they aren't the cheapest for what you get and a bit plasticy inside (a bit like an oversized ford mondeo), they have plenty of space inside and its flexible space wise with the ability to shift/remove seats around quite a bit, aslong as you get something with >90BHP engine they aren't too bad to drive either and reasonable economy and they will go on and on and on well over 100K miles with usually little maintenance.

Aslong as its mostly motorway miles, they will go well into the 100s of thousand of miles usually without any major problems, tho the turbo usually needs some moderate maintenance at around 150K. If the turbo is given some TLC every ~70K then they will do around 400K miles before any serious failure usually.

Even our works 2.3 petrol Galaxy has managed 150k miles with very few problems so far. That does the 300 mile round trip to our other factory at least a couple of times a week.

It's certainly not the most economical of things though, around 300 miles from an £85 fill up.
