Soon after being captured, the Terminators identify Reese. We know this because we go into Terminator-Vision, and see text along the lines of “Identified: Kyle Reese. Why not just kill him since they know he has John Connor's father and if they did then Connor would be dead?

Although I don't know the films off by heart, I'm with you there that it was all about T1 and T2 only.
