Scariest place you have ever been?

Hanging out of the side door of a Cessna 206 3.5k up in the air for jump no 1. Everything that could go wrong went through my mind at this point. Thankfully 5 seconds later the chute deployed (with twists) and I experienced one of the greatest releases of my life.

Walking across the summit plateau of Blencathra in full whiteout conditions January 2010.

We were walking on a preplanned compass bearing which was correct and we found the exit ridge but it was heart in the mouth for a while. The horizon was invisible as it blended with the sky

GPS screen froze so that was useless, as did my specs.

I was once in an area of Belfast like that, albeit only briefly (thankfully!). It just confused the hell out of me. Scraggly looking kids walking around the street with empty 500ml coke bottles with liquid mercury at the bottom of them?

Was there to visit a friend of a friend (and smoke a bowl ;)). Went into his terraced house, which looked like a squat more than anything despite being a family home, and went up to his bedroom which also looked like a squat. Filthy mattresses with no coverings on them and alarmingly, again, raw liquid mercury just rolling around the bed? Pretty unnerving just because of the completely alien circumstances.

Yeah, very sketchy. I only really knew one of the people and even then I didn't know them very well and certainly wouldn't trust them. Everyone else in the room were just scumbag junkies. You just have to wait it out though, I stood around just drinking a beer trying to ensure I wasn't put into an awkward (or dangerous) situation. Was only there for about 30 minutes, but in a room with sheets over the windows, telly on static, and heroin/coke/crack and assocaited paraphernalia (had to be careful not to put my can down, in case I picked up a pipe can by accident) and junkies dotted around isn't somewhere you really want to be at all.

Heading out of Belfast to be greeted with a Short Strand riot .. not fun being in the car !!

Broke a few traffic laws getting out of dodge that day but nothing came of it.

Similar to this etc

Like above, mountain white outs are pretty scary.

and

Walking amongst Millwall FC Scum after a football match at Ipswich, listening to them laugh about who they just punched and the faces he pulled. Glad no colours were on me. Was nice to see policeman at the train station lol.

If anyone has been to centre parks longleat and has cycled around a fair bit, there are a couple of hills that have signs saying that you can't cycle down them ( for good reasons as they are very steep).
I once decided to go down one without knowing how steep and how long it was , it was pretty steep and I managed to do something like ~30 -40 mph, perhaps higher.

I was crapping myself as a 12 year old and in these situations you dare not break as you would probably go over the handlebars or slide.

That's funny, I did exactly that last year! Except without the crapping myself part, it was fun!

Not exactley the scariest of places but in terms of atmosphere S21 in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia was the worst place I've ever been. Hard to describe, it was probably a physcological thing but I swear I could smell and taste blood.

The Greyhound bus station in Buffalo. I still can't believe we got out alive. Full of the most unpleasant characters I've ever seen. As soon as we got off the bus some creepy old guy came up to one of my mates and tried to lead him off to a dark corner while whispering "I want to show you something" :( It was scary and totally depressing..........it was about 2:00am and cold and foggy outside too. Urg - my heart sinks just thinking about it. Maybe it wasn't the most scared I've ever been, but certainly the most uncomfortable and downhearted I've ever been.

Before anybody says "why the eck did you go to Buffalo anyway???" - it was on the way to Niagra Falls :)

In no particular order

The room they march you off to at JFK immigration if they decide they don't like you.

Passenger in a car knowing it's about to crash and there's nothing the driver can do.

A security checkpoint in Africa (as a child), checkpoint man with gun wanted to buy me.

Village in Africa (as a child), man with gun wanted to buy me.

The bad part of LA.

Fight on a night out here.

Driving down this road with just a hugh fall on one side

We also drove through a mountain which had a spiral road cut into it, so that you came out on top of the mountain to a spectacular view.

The big drop off's and corners don't worry me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWYOvH6khrQ . Think the thing about the autobahn was the whole slow motion thing , seemed to take for ever and was probably over in seconds

My brother and I were locking up the back yards and putting the dogs in for the night. Da was on night duty so it was up to us to secure around the house and put stuff away. Coming up to 12 midnight and an almighty ******* bang, we knew right away it was a bomb and we knew this was a very big one. Scared the absolute ****e out of me, as we would often secure the house and garden with the guns and my head rattled.

We ran into the house and waited for the call.

Glenanne Army barracks had been hit; it was one of the largest bombs ever let off by the IRA. Over 2500 lb’s of high explosives packed into a lorry. We got a call that the scene was mental, Co Armagh 2nd battalion DR, three soldiers were killed. I think about twelve others were injured. I went down to it the next day. ******** madness, I stood in the hole in the ground the bomb made and have never seen anything like that before in Northern Ireland. The bomb was heard by people over the border in The Republic of Ireland over 34 miles away.

A very scary night.

I'm sure I've been some more scary places, but off the top of my head:
Some little wooded area in mountainous Europe somewhere, can't have been more than 200m path through it, but for some reason I really hated it. It was a warm sunny day, but there was just something that felt really sinister.
Another place would be the track past a house that I sometimes pass when out for a run. A few days ago I was running with my dad and some vicious dog suddenly came sprinting out of the houses driveway, barking and chasing us, I genuinely thought I was going to get bitten. I think it jumped at me from behind but missed... Anyway, I ran the rest of the way home a lot faster! I've been wary about going past since then, and I think I'll probably plan a different route. Or bring a crowbar with me.
