:( :( :(

Turn the lights off ready to go to bed, caught a cable and it fell straight down onto the ground. About a 3rd drop onto the back side of the unit (synology ds211j)
It powers up and the disks spin but doesn't fully start up.

I don't know where to start. I'm preying it's just the unit that is damaged and not the drives, everything is on there. It's raid 1 so if 1 drive is fudged then I have another.

What signs should I be looking for?
Would the disks still spin and sound normal if they were damaged?

The only thing that is different is the fan noise, slightly louder.

Halp....

Thank god it didn't take my ipad2 down with it, it was balanced very close to it lmao.
:(

First step is to plug both drives into PC or external caddy and see if any data can be read from them.

Once you know your data is safe, you can think about repairing/replacing your NAS. Then possibly put it somewhere where twits can't trip over it! :p

[A backup of your NAS, as this proves, is also a good idea!]

Right just back from the shops with a 3.5" enclosure.

Put the first HDD in and it spins up no odd sounds, in computer manager it states that all is health and the disc is functioning correctly.
Its not allowing me to mount it though or assign a drive letter. How would i do this?
Is it because its formatted in synology's format and not ntfs?

but the signs are good that atleast 1 drive is ok meaning i have my data!

Thoughts on mounting first though?
Thanks,

Em

The drives were in a Raid1 config. Is this going to stop me from mounting them?

Lets say the nas is broken and i get a new one. If i pop these 2 drives into it, still with the data on, what will happen? It will ask me if i want to raid them, i.e. erase all the data?

If it's RAID 1 you should be fine to mount it depending on how clever the software is.

You could speak to their support department but I reckon they'll probably just try and sell you a new one.

Iv just posted on their forums, hopefully i will get a reply back soon.

OcUK might be getting some unexpected business from me soon...

Now to try this ext3 software!

*edit*

The ext3 software mention above only works on either images or mounted drives, so i cant use it as the nas drive isnt mounted. Only visible in comp manager.

Im having no luck with any Ext3 software packages claiming to be able to mount them in windows.

When i try to mount the drives it asks me to format them before i am able to use them... wtf i need the data!

all of the software progs say that the drives have like 1894GB space and is 100% full
I cant remember how much data i have on them, like maybe 1TB

Iv tried on vista and on 7 i just cannot get anything to make sense.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you got a distro of linux handy? I've found in the past if Windows can't view all the files on the drive, chances are linux can. Grab a live-cd from ubuntu, boot from cd, and then see if linux is able to look at the files, this way you can copy all the files to your main pc hdd, and jobs a goodun.

When you get your data back, LEARN from this mistake. Keep another backup, as RAID doesn't count as a backup.

An Ubuntu livecd ought to figure out what's on the drive. Copy the data off the drive to your local hard drive.

What're your plans for a NAS now? You going to get a new one?

Yea i always saw my nas as a redundant back up lol thinking if 1 drive goes thats fine...

Lesson learned!

Ubuntu live cd, will it be able to handle the drive being in a usb caddie?
And I don't have enough space on my current internal hdd's (500gb's) to back up so my thoughts are a portable 2tb drive. iv been meaning to get one for a while.
Will the data be accepted onto another usb hdd?

Thanks!
Em

*edit*

Yea i think this nas is past it. tbh my first priority is to get this data safe, then ill look into whats wrong with the nas.
More than likely going to get another ds211j from our good friends ocuk ... maybe they will give a free one to review :P

OMFG is all i have to say right now!

I thought to myself, may aswell give it another go, so put the 2 drives into the nas and set it away booting. about 10mins past and i heard the loud boot beep....
ran to my computer and logged into the admin page and there was the error. disk 2 cannot initialize!
Disk 1 is fine.
Took the offending disk 2 out and disc 1 is fine, all data is accessible.
So the fall broke the drive :(

Just ordered a new one from these lovely ocuk chaps.

Anyone had experience with putting a fresh disc into a raid 1 config where a drive has died?
Does it rebuild itself or will i have to go through certain steps?

Woo! No data lost, so relieving!

I can't help, but these are questions that people should know the answers to BEFORE they setup a raid array, for anyone else that may be reading.

I imagine you will need to manually add the new drive to the array then the NAS will go about rebuilding the array.

Since you are using raid 1 should anything like this happen in future your steps should be

Remove disk 2.. attempt to boot
Remove disk 1 and replace disk 2 (original slot) .... attempt to boot
Move disk 2 to the disk 1 slot... attempt to boot

It'd be unfortunate if it landed hard enough to kill both your drives, however that said your now only running on 1 disk so either make sure you backup anything important in the meantime and if the content is really important.. consider turning it off until your new drive arrives, afterall the disk you still have also suffered the fall.. it might not be dead but it could have had its life shortened significantly and fail some time soon

Yea its been turned off, and the new drive has been ordered. Will be here on Tuesday, damn the holidays!

I'm just happy that the data is safe, any for all of you that have been saying raid isn't a backup, my mind set has now been changed!
I will be looking into backup methods from now on :)

Cheers!
