Hi Guys,

Is it worth me going tri-fire with a 6990 and 6970 at a res of 1080p? I would ofcourse max out the AA and stuff but is it a waste at that res? Hows about having 2 6990s at that res also LOL.

Ta :)

Im sure loads would say no it is not worth it but i say if you have the money and it would all fit and work properly then go for the best option........i cannot however tell you what the best option is but im certain other members will indeed tell you :)

probably not - an overclocked 6970 would just about max out most games @ 1080p @ about 60fps minimum. as you have a 5970 atm i wouldnt really bother upgrading if its just 1080p - you could spend the money on a bigger res monitor like the u2711 and get more out of your current gpu, and upgrade to a better card 1-2 gens in the future :)

if you have plenty of money, you can go for it if you want - no one is stopping you :)

I know the op has a 60 inch 1080p tv as his monitor due to sight problems.
So unless a monitor goes up to the same sort of size then that isnt a upgrade he could make unfortunatley

Yes, wouldn't bother, in some situations it would give extra fps, but nothing noticeable. Frankly spend the cash on watercooling for the gpu.

Not sure if your sig is up to date or if you already have a 6970 or a 6990, xfire 6950's unlocked or a 6990 then watercool them rather than adding a third card. Scale better and generally just work better than 5970's do, noticeable faster, decent overclocking with watercooling aswell.

I don't have an issue with spending cash to absolutely max out games even if it was only 3-4 games that ran a little slower than you wanted, but trifire really won't give you a single noticeable improvement in any game available nor that will be available for some time.

Thanks guys:) I may just get a 6990 then. Drunkenmaster, I have cerebral palsy so can't really "fiddle about" with custom watercooling I'm afraid. Is it ok to run a 6990 in turbo mode with the stock cooler?

GO QUADFIRE!!!

Actually don't hehe. Not at that miniscule resolution (relatively speaking).

I ordered the 6990 today:) Good job I didnt get a 6970 too as it woundn't fit in the slot I was planning to put it in because my PSU is in the way LOL. The other slot it could go in would mean I'd lose my PCI soundcard.

Good for you mate, let us all know how you get on with your new card.

Enjoy.

It came today and the awesome one put it in my PC:) Idle its a bit louder than the 5970 but acually cooler. Gaming with Vsync on is louder than the 5970 but not by that much. ran a just cause 2 benchmark without V sync and got 80fps average (on the 3rd one) and the fan did get loud when it displayed the result. I have vsync on so the card wont often get that hight and if it does, gives me an excuse to turn the sound right up :D Oh, and it is hot here today LOL
