First time shooting bikes, and the first time I've shot at Donington. The best spot was jam packed with togs but managed to find some good spots. My panning got a lot better on the day, with an exponential increase in skill required as shutter speeds get lower- 1/80th was the slowest I pulled off.

Enjoyed the day and look forward to more motorsport days.

I'd be happy with those! Where did you position yourself to take these??

Also, what lens was on the end of your 1000D??

Cheers guys! The first shot was taken on the Craner Curves, the other two from the Fogarty Esses. Only ended up going around the western half of the track so may have missed some potentially good spots, need to prepare better for next time and do some proper research instead of just turning up!

I have the new (ish) Tamron 70-300 SP VC DI zoom, it's a cracking lens. Best telephoto zoom you can buy under £450 in my view.

These are great, you get a real sense of speed from them :) - Love the processing on the last one!

Fusion, Have you tightly cropped these down?

The reason I ask it Donny is just up the road from me and I have the Canon 55-250 lens, so assuming you haven't had to massively crop then im thinking my 250mm reach may be enough!!

Side5wipe- Yeah opportunities are limited, just have to make the best of what's available.

lukechad- The full size of the first pic (after cropping) is 3282 x 1728, originally it was 3888 x 2592, so it's about 84% of the width and 67% of the height of the original. The others are similar, so not really heavily cropped.

300mm was fine, 400mm-500mm would be great, 250mm will just about be adequate. The second shot was taken at 271mm but the others were at 300mm. You need a fast focusing lens though, I will say that. I don't know what the AF is like on the Canon 55-250mm but on the Tamron it is very fast (USM). Some of these bikes are extremely quick.

Go and give it a shot, nothing ventured and all that.

Cheers chaps.

Love the first and last, look pin sharp to me and the panning created very nice backgrounds, definite wallpaper or print material :) The rest are good too but some movement in the riders which I guess can't be helped at those shutter speeds :)

I keep forgetting Donington is just up the road from me and I always want things to do at the weekend, I'll have a look what they have on the next few months.

Thanks, I'm going to order some prints I reckon. Donington is definitely worth visiting, there are a few decent vantage points. It's worth exploring all the track (inside and out), it's quite a big area though so be prepared to hike round with your gear.

Cheers SDK, great to receive a compliment from you as you were one of my heroes back in the day with your bike snaps!

One thing I would say, next time try to position yourself in a place where the bike will be either facing you or turning towards you :)

This is near impossible at donnington without a media pass as there's fencing restricting the points where you can actually shoot from around pretty much most of the track.
