Over the weekend we'll be driving up the M6 between Liverpool and Manchester:

We'd like to stop for a few hours around lunch to break the journey but I don't know the area at all. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice for lunch within ~10 miles of the motorway. Something outdoors, without high ticket prices... any nice National Trust gardens?

Bring a picnic; then you can pull off at any suitable-looking area to eat, and while away the remaining time entertaining onlookers through the magic of interpretive dance.

That can't be much more than an hours journey. Have lunch when you get there.

edit: according to AA, it's 46 min

Ahh I think i've misunderstood what you meant:o

Junction 16, overclockers - 5 minutes

Stop at Lymm.

Lovely village, and you can have a picnic round Lymm Dam.

Come off at J20 and follow the signs for Lymm. Only a few miles off the motorway. Will be a nice way to kill a few hours :)

It's around 260 miles - the bit in the map is just the middle bit where we're thinking to stop!

So Bristol to Lancaster or somewhere? Unless you have small children then you can easily do that without stopping, maybe one stop if you or a passenger has a weak bladder. Stopping for a few hours seems a bit pointless to me!

Well I grew up in Leyland, while it's sadly no longer a charming Lancashire town, Worden Park is always nice and may meet your requirements: http://www.southribble.gov.uk/Section.asp?sectiontype=listseparate&catid=300465

Free entry, ample parking (was always free though may have changed), nice walks, gardens, arts and craft centre, coffee shop for lunch or there's a big ass Tesco in town not far away if you need to buy stuff for a picnic.

Its south of where your map (not sure how many miles you can give or take) shows but how about:
http://www.trentham.co.uk/
Shopping district with eateries, lots of nice grassy areas, if you dont mind paying a bit more then theres the trentham gardens which a lovely to be in or monkey forest where you potter around a path withth lil monkies wandering about the place. Its only a mile or so from the motorway if I remember rightly.

Trentham is miles away from that area!

about 25 miles south. I did say it was below. 20-25 minutes difference (so hardly lightyears) on the motorway so its not that bad. Its also pretty much right next to the motorway which would surely be better if the OP cant find anywhere close by in the section he posted.

Just going by places I have been, not overly familiar with the area so just offering what I do know. If you like the comedian Rhod Gilbert then theres always Knutsford service station.

Yeah Tatton Park would be a good choice. Jodrell Bank isn't too far from the M6 as well if you want something more sciency.

Its possible, he just wants to stop. Take the chance to do something on a nice day simply because he has the time available. Not everybody lives life at the same pace.

Bingo! Don't need to get there 'til 5ish, and can leave Bristol first thing. We're thinking to taking this chance to stop somewhere interesting on route.

Round Lymm is nice. Other options could be Little Moreton Hall (National Trust) or Jodrell Bank.

Yeah, Lymm looks good. Is there much to see at Jodrell Bank?
