What does anyone without a credit card do for online ordering? I’ve not got a credit card anymore, after racking up nearly 55K in personal debt some years ago and penny pinching my way out of it without debt management plans, IVA’s or bankruptcy I live a life of zero credit… and zero debt.

I don’t even have a mortgage. Problem is, buying online is cheaper for most stuff, and I’ve only got my debit card that’s linked to my account that has my wages paid in.

I really can’t be doing with the faffing around that is opening another slush fund type of account to load money onto it to make card payments online, as makes me have to plan EVERY Single purchase, like for example..

I want to buy a game from Steam yet I can’t as I’ve not got a credit card linked to my steam ID, or I would have purchased the cheap 2TB drive on here but yet again, no credit card.

Is online ordering with debit card now safe? I’m not so sure, so always buying my stuff in shops, its not as cost effective..

Opinions? Being overly paranoid?? Sorry if this is seen as a bit of a dumb question, I wouldn't ask if I wasn't so unsure about how safe it is... Don't fancy my bank account being emptied out, and even if you do use trusted sites, we all hear the tales of records being stolen.. Such as play.com recently..!!

or use paypal and link it to your bank details? many stores accept paypal payments online now (not talking about ebay).

Debit cards are fine as long as you are using reputable websites and companies. Plus, many places also have Worldpay where you have to enter some digits of a password which further increases security.

Always has been. Safer in fact because visa cards cover defaults below £100 as well as above.

Agreed.

You mean Verified By Visa (Or verified by MasterCard). Worldpay is just another card processing company. (A reputable one).

OP - Don't worry, its perfectly safe as long as you trust the site.

I've never encountered any problems using my debit card. I gave up on all credit cards in 1995 -- if I don't have the money I shouldn't be buying something. Just always make sure the transaction site is secure, and don't use any dodgy sites.

Yeah, you're right. Got muddled up. Worldpay uses Verified By XYZ though.

Ok, well seems many of you use a debit card online, I’ll just ensure the site is secure https and is signed etc and stay to reputable companies.

Seems a shame to miss out on decent deals just because I’ve decided no more credit, one bitten, twice shy and all that… I no doubt I could obtain a small credit card but that’s where it all starts… That £500 card limit soon expands..

Cheers all. Mind now at rest, I’ll give it a go.

if you want to be extra safe you can push stuff through paypal where available or load up a pre-paid card (although most will charge you a little to do so)

You don't need a credit card at all. Using only a debit card and removing even an overdraft on your account makes you vastly more "money wise" when it comes to how much realistic spending power you have without getting involved with credit facilities.
