The missus' TT has gone wrong

Won't go into 1st 2nd or reverse gear, RAC man couldn't see anything obvious with external linkages

No crunching or anything, just won't go into those gears and when you try the shift feels slack

Drove it home in 3rd/4th but with bank hols etc might be tricky to get it looked at for a few days

anyone got any ideas of what may be wrong and whether it's going to cost loads

does it go in to those gears without the engine running and not using the clutch?

well that's blown it, put it into position for first gear but it didn't engage

the gearstick is now stuck in that position and I can't shift it :(

That's a bother now, gonne be hard to get to wherever it is going to get repaired

gearstick won't move with engine running or not and with clutch engaged or not

stuck in first gear position but not engaged

One of the clutch cylinders? I had the slave cylinder go one one of my cars and it wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd. Was fun trying to pull away in 3rd in a 1.0l Metro...

feels far too precise a fault, no feeling in 1st / 2nd but was absolutely fine in 3rd etc

I had the same problem on my mk4 seat ibiza. It'll be the selector fork from the 1st shaft - it selects 1st, 2nd and reverse. A rivet had sheered and the fork fell to the bottom of the gear box eventually. This jammed up the the selector and I couldn't get any gears from there.

Not a cheap or easy fix unfortunately :(

I made a thread on seatcupra.net when it happend.

*note* I hope for your sake I'm wrong, but the symptoms point to it.

Can you get the surround / gaitor off the stick and have a look at the linkages below? These often have plastic bits in and obviously you only need it to be out by a tiny bit for it to not want to do your bidding.

Does the gearstick feel "right"? They can pop out of the cup at the bottom which removes all of your leverage and again results in you not being able to select gears properly.

If you rock the car back and forth while the Mrs tries to pull it out of gear, that may free it up. Sounds like a very bizarre issue - what was it doing before? Was it sudden or has it been getting gradually worse?

sounds similar, was the £1300 main dealer quote ? I would imagine a fecon box would be less than that

she said she struggled a couple of times with reverse yesterday but it went suddenly today

I can see what you mean re rocking it but I would imagine that would only work if a gear was engaged

felt right in other gears

If you look down to where it joins the gerabox you can see things moving when you move gearstick

I can't quite remember, but looking back at my thread that was a main seat dealer, parts at £1300 - this included flywheel and clutch, labour on top.

At the time I scouted around for a recon box on a trade in basis and it was around £500.
