I have never had the knack of skimming the stones perfectly on water, people say flat surface stones are best, I can usually get two skims and have got about four.

Any tips to be the best? :)

1) stones with a flatter surface are better
2) start and finish your throw low
3) use a sideways action, rather than up'n'over your shoulder

The more flick the better, I find. Smoother rounder and flatter pebbles are best, but really you can get pretty much any shaped stone to do a couple of bounces with the right technique.
Angle is very important... you want to release it so it's angled slightly upwards, but not too much.. I'd say about 30 degrees max... any more and it'll do the next bounce or two more to the vertical and just bomb :(
Don't throw it as hard as you can. You'll probably fail.

Not like this!

Lol thread. Talk about scraping the barrel to try and hide the fact that this forum section is dead! Who put you up to this 5UB I wonder? :p

Not dead at all, just not as active as the other subforums. :)

How many skims have you ever managed? :p

The stone must become your arm; the water your mind. Breathe deeply and attune yourself to that vast cosmic wateryness. Let the stone fly, free and graceful like a... skimming thing.

Most I've ever managed was 12 :o

Technique? Only real pointer is to get some spin on it and keep it low. Sideways flick action is of course better than over-the-arm.

You can skip anything if you get enough spin on it (I've skipped quarter bricks and some obscure shapes before).

i used to love skimming.. i was crap like, 5 or 6 skims.. that guy who does it on youtube, wtf :O how the hellllllll

Ah such a simple joy in life, but so satisfying to me for some reason!

I have a good knack for it too, amazingly.

Definately throw from the side and the opposite way you would usually throw a frisbee, so with your forearm facing behind you.

Best stones I find are flat ones with still with a bit of weight.

With skill you can skim just about anything - I saw someone skim a stone about the size and shape of half a brick once!

I usually only get about 3 or 4 bounces, but like most things, practice really does help... getting the angle and spin right, getting a smooth release, and not putting excessive effort in seem to be important to me.
