Had to add something into the title so that people wouldn't just swoop in without reading the (hopefully soon to exist - mods :)) poll.

Poll please!

This is just for a bit of fun really. Do you actually care that much about space exploration? I was reading the STS-134 thread and saw a comment or so about how such news isn't well publicised. All I could think was 'huh, I really don't care about this actually...'.

Now, to clarify, I think space itself is facinating but I'm someone who is attracted to big flashing lights and exciting broad scientific principles. This means anything less generally disinterests me - you won't catch me browsing new scientist that's for sure.

I recall there being a lot of disappointment that space travel budgets were slashed and there would be fewer missions and what-not, which I can appreciate isn't ideal at all. But I'm certainly not one to be looking up the latest space news on a daily basis, if ever at all. I can take it or leave it. I guess this is down to the fact that it's not something that really has any impact on my life or on society, generally speaking.

So, which opinion camp do you fit into edit - slightly clarified
  • 1) Space exploration is of upmost importance and should be one of the highest priorities of the human race in regards to financial resources
  • 2) Space exploration is obviously very important but there are still big issues to solve on earth that should possibly take priority in regards to financial resources
  • 3) I'm not fussed on space travel, it should definitely be put on the back burner compared to fixing other social issues in regards to financial resources
  • 4) I really could not care less about space travel - seems a waste of time and money when you look what is going on at home ...in regards to financial resources
  • 5) Lysander in regards to financial resources

I guess I'm hovering around somewhere between 2 and 3. Typically useless of me, can't even come up with poll options that wholly satisfy myself! :p

What say you, OCUK massive?

Without going all Brian Cox gushy... Exploring the universe and finding how we fit into it is massively important imo.

1) Space exploration is of upmost importance and should be one of the highest priorities of the human race

But only because point number two doesn't really fit right. There are still big issues on earth that are important to fix, but I don't see how delaying or focusing efforts away from Space Exploration will help to solve them.

I think like in all times there are priorities. Back when it was important for a Space Race to have taken place people were excited about it. Don't forget too that it was new.

That newness factor's worn off now and there are other more important things.

It excites me, but I rarely make any special effort for it.

Should it have such a high priority, probably not. I'm sure China and India have more urgent priorities. But to stop it, or leave it back to just the one nation doing it would slow us down technologically.

A mix of 1 and 2, but mainly 1.
Reminds me to get the 'scope out at some point;) although, knowing me, i will probably wait until it starts getting cloudy and starts raining again:rolleyes:

Exploring space is the most important thing for our race as a whole IMO. Hopefully if mankind ever reaches other worlds we don't bring our religions and nationalism with us. This rock isn't getting bigger and there is only so much "stuff" that's useful, unless population counts drop significantly

1.5 :)

We'll eventually have to leave this planet and find pastures new, to preserve the human race, so the more we invest in space exploration the quicker this can happen but issues such as famine and disease should be treated as a priority atm.

1) With a shadow of a doubt - I find it interesting that not everyone realises this.

Our time on Earth is limited. Period. Fact. We NEED to find more places to colonise and for their resources. The happy clappy crowd that makes us all put the effort towards recycling would be far better put towards finding more places to get resources from!

Recycling is a delaying tactic, there are finite resources on this planet.

A mix of one and two, but leaning towards 1.
We do need to understand more where we fit in, but space exploration is the pinnacle of human exploration/cutting edge development and that is why it is so important. So many developments that started as a result of space exploration and a way to get around a particular problem filter down eventually to us common oiks :D

Just look at the voyagers, after all this time, they are about to go out of our solar system and into deep space. Deep space! I repeat, deep space. All we know about deep space is theory, and equations, nothing has ever been there before - it is truly mind boggling..

I also wish we would put more into deep oceanic trench exploration for exactly the same reasons, pushing our existing technological boundries is something we should celebrate..

This... I think.

I'm fascinated by space exploration. I have been for a long time. I love the sheer size and scale of things. And the Brian Cox series really renewed my interest recently.

But really, should I really care? The future of our civilisation will not matter to me... ill be dead. But for human kind to survive; eventually space exploration will be key i think.

1. Times running out. If we don't get off world soon the human race will either be wiped out by disaster or resend into anarchy as the remain resources dwindle.

Every time I look into space I feel amazing; I can only describe the feeling as enlightening. So I'd say it's pretty important to me and of course very interesting.
