2002 MGF

Imo they are one of the worst cars of their kind I've ever driven. They're far from fast, nor are they exciting, quiet or comfortable to drive. I can't comment on the handling too much I've not had chance to try that out. The interior is horribly cheap and nasty, rattles like hell. The roof is noisy, bad seals. Not to mention the HG issues :D Plus the clutch is heavy, gearbox is clunky, and they like to rot well also.

I'd certainly give an MX-5 a test drive before you part with any money. My dad used to have an old G-reg one, it was a cracking car and he never had any issues with it, they are fantastic to drive.

I think I would rather have a good MG over a sheddy MX5 (as they would be similar price wise), but having driven neither I couldn't say for sure.

You can get a MG Trophy 160 for not much cash compared to an older slower MX5.

2k should be able to buy a tidy mk1 So it isn't a case of tidy MG vs sheddy MX-5

i now have a sig and avatar, just for you mind. ;)

Appreciate it :p

As long as it has been repaired properly then there should not be any reason to expect future problems. My MGF experienced HGF four years ago and has been fine since. I do of course check the coolant level regularly.

Have you driven one or not?
Surely if you have driven one to the point of it not being comfortable (more were sold than MX5s in the UK, i cannot think that they will be generically uncomfortable) then surely you have an idea on the handling.

How many were sold world wide?

Yes I have, and I didn't find it comfortable, mainly down the the pedals which seem to be at a funny angle. I don't have much of an idea on handling because I've not been able to drive one far on any decent kind of road. I just think their typical cheap MG tat.

I have driven both, and have no idea why people ramble on about the MX5. It really isn't that special. Then again, I wasn't overly enchanted by the TF I drove - I just didn't really think much of either. :p

Edit: To the guy above slating, the one thing I do remember about the TF was that it was pretty quick - the 160bhp version anyway. Isn't the MX5 something like 120bhp?

I had a TF160 and they are pretty nippy and would return 30-35 mpg. The thing about these cars ares they are cheap, fun and great in the summer. Not so much fun in the winter when they're cold, noisy and leaky, slightly better if you fit a hard top. Personally I prefer the look of them to the MX5

HGF will inevitably happen and will cost £500 to sort out. If you get the uprated gasket though it shouldn't reoccur as long as you've got no other underlying cooling problems as already said..

Anyways, loads of good info and a friendly bunch on the MGF/TF section at MGRover.org so get yourself over there..

Thanks guy's, some excellent replies. Will be phoning the car in the link tomorrow, seem's a good deal almost TOO good :)

Just not too keen on the older MX5's to be honest, although their reputation for reliability does preceed them.
I did drive both cars and they are both cracking fun. That's what I'm after, and will be trying to get hold of a hard top for the winter.
I'll let you know what happens!

I'm pretty sure that car linked isnt' a TF160, wrong wheels anyway and no TF160 badge I can see, best double check before making a trip..

Also the description of the seats doesn't add up, it says they are partial leather / suede but those seats look like leather to me. No sign of the usual bobbly Alcantara ;)
