I am thinking of upgrading from my 5850 to one of the gigabyte 480 super oc that are on offer at the moment.

I have a 1920 1080 monitor.

Will I notice much of an improvement at this resolution?

How will this 480 compare with my 5850 for noise and heat? My computer is in my bedroom and I don't want it to be noisy.

Overall is this a worthwhile upgrade?

to be honest as a single card yes it will be decently faster than your 5850 but theres 5850's going on here for cheap if you run another 5850 in xfire that will beat a 480 even with them on offer for pretty much half the price.

Crossfire is great when it works. Unfortunately it did'nt for me. I got a MSI Twin Frozer 5850 to go with my Asus 5850 and had no end of problems. Stupidly enough benchmarks worked fine but every game i tried to launch either just locked up or bluescreened. Take the MSI back out and all was fine. The MSI got returned for a refund, the Asus sold and i got my 480 instead.

For the vast majority crossfire should be fine. I am just saying that it does'nt always go to plan and problems can happen.

I should have explained more about why I am comparing them.

I ma planning to build my dad a system. I was considering dropping the 5850 in the computer for my dad and upgrading my own system with a new graphics card.

Therefore I was really wondering what would be a good upgrade from the 5850.

My concerns with the 480, was that it was reputedly very hot and loud when it was launched. Does the Gigabyte super OC 480 still have these problems?

For that res, I think if you overclock your 5850 to around 900MHz core clock, it will handle 98% of the games fine with 4xSSAA.

Personally, I would say near the end of the year would be a better time for upgrading graphic card, as the new graphic cards GPUs are going be on 28nm instead of current's 40nm, so they should consume lower power and produce less heat.

Sure you get upgrade your graphic card now, but do bare in mind that it will produce more heat, and which the heat will get vent out from your PC into your room. With the high temperature last couple of days and summer around the corner, not really sure it would be worth it to upgrade graphic card now...unless your room is very cool and you hardly feel like you are sweating at all.

I think the question you should ask yourself is...is your 5850 really struggling at all...in the games you play?

Running Mt GB 480 SOc max 75c idle 40/41c and compared to the ASUS 480GTx I had very quiet, go for it I would be surprised if you will regret it, I have built two systems in the last 5 weeks and both had this card and both have been fine.
