Hey guys.

As I have a few days before I can order my build i've been further researching.. you know how it is when you have too much time to think?
I've been admiring cases in the case thread and thought it would be good to get ideas on cases that would suit my needs.

The case in my basket atm is the Fractal Define XL which fits most of my criteria but it seems huge and I would like to hear your suggestions on alternative cases that fit my critieria that could be better than the Fractal.

I've browsed the OCUK shop but I know there are more cases out there so there may be better options, also I may have missed a suitable case due to lack of pics provided or price range at the time..
Heres my criteria!

Minimal - Not too over the top but its not a dealbreaker, other points are more important

(mostly) Flat top - I sit my USB audio interface ontop of the case for easier access, so it needs an area to sit with room for cables/leads (see Pic)

Ports not on top - This is the one criteria the Fractal fails on, having the usb and jacks ontop which gets in the way of my interface when i'm using it (see pic), of course I can just unplug USB things such as gamepads and headset when i'm using recording gear but maybe theres a better alternative case?

Quiet/Acousticly treated - Need this as I record vocals in the same room and my current PC is so loud. Its just a case of quieter is better, just for every day things aswell. The Fractal is good because it comes pre-fitted with acoustic material but i'm up for buying that seperately if a superior case comes along only lacking that but has the option of buying it as an accessory.

Sufficient cooling - I'm getting a i5 2500k and hope to OC it to 4ghz+ so I guess this is important.

Price - I'm not too fussed if its good enough, the fractal is around £80 but I can go up if its worth it!

Heres a pic of my current PC, so you can see the interface ontop, how big it is and how the leads/cables come out the front therefore top ports on a new case would be a bit troublesome.

Heres my build spec if it helps or anyones interested - Already got GTX470 and 3 SATA drives.

OCUK has been really helpful already so it will be interesting and helpful to see your suggestions and opinions, considering i've never bought a case for a scratch build and i'm noway a experienced as most of the people here!

Thanks for your help!!

a lot of people say that them "no fuss water cooling kits" are loud, either with the stock fans being loud or vibration from the pump, as you are wanting it as quiet as possible, i would recommend the NHD14, it is a huge lump, and is a very quiet CPU cooler indeed and is considered one of the best Air coolers on the market. either that or the Thermalright Silver Arrow have pretty much the same performance.

as for cases i would say take a look at the fractal XL (has no top fans) it looks very good, reviews say it is very nice indeed aswel. but dont take my word for any of this this is just what i have heard, haven't seen it in person but i have been looking for a similar case you you and everything seems to point at it atm.

some more experienced people will be able to give you better advice than me, so hang on for a few more replies :)

Hey, SupermotoMX cheers for your time... The fractal XL is the one in my basket, I feel it might be too big but I don't know, I did consider the smaller one but i'm worried about the vents on top with regards to putting my little interface on it, not sure if it would actually be an issue. Also don't know the pros and cons of the XL vs the smaller... as I said the only proper issue I can find with the Fractal's is the usb ports being ontop.. So I wonder if theres a better case out there i'm just not noticing (especially as i've only really browsed OCUK to a certain extent).

Points regarding the Kuhler watercooler.. Odd, I thought it would be good as it was water and it would most likely be a lot quieter than a fan. God that cooler is ugly, beige like? But reviews seem good.. I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on the self contained cooler vs air.
One worry that was put to rest with the Kuhler was the fact it has the TIM already applied and thats one of my fears with building my first PC for some reason.

Looking forward to further replies and suggestions - Got till early Tuesday to finalise for once and for all!

well if you wanted the F3 (smaller than the XL) i understand it comes with foam so you can block off the top fan ports, either one or both of them.

no need to worry about putting on the TIM, its a lot less scary than it first seems, get a tube of some nice mx-4 (none conductive) put a nice pea sized blob in the middle, and tighten away, (when the added pressure from the CPU coolergoes down, it will spread the paste all by itself) the good thing with it being none conductive, if you did put abit much on the CPU and it squeezes out the sides, your not going to fry anything

Thanks again for your reply :)

I've seen a few tutorials on applying TIM, I think my fear just comes from an experience when I tried to combine my old parts to make a PC for my father and I just bought some Akasa thermal tape as I knew nothing and couldn't seem to get it to work and the system wouldn't boot.. But thats not paste and somehow paste seems easier now i've looked into it.:)

I've seen a lot of builds around here in my searches of the smaller Fractal, as there seemed to be a bit of hype when it came into stock for the first time, but not much on people using the XL. The smaller one seems mostly fine but if I want sufficient but quiet cooling wouldn't I have to use the top grills?

Also I seem to have gathered the opinion that the XL is not as good as the R3 overall, in terms of cooling and possibly noise.. I have a hard time making choices!

You cannot go wrong with the coolermaster 690 v2, thats my suggestion.

Did look at it but also has ports on the top. Cheers for the suggestion though!

I figure this wouldn't be an issue if I had a desk long enough to have my PC underneath it therefore being able to put my interface on the desk above it.. so now i'm pondering desks.. Since being a member at OCUK I feel I have wanted more and more, I blame the desk and room thread, along with the show us your case type threads.. addictive this stuff :(
