i think theres a problem with the shipping fee's thing. i dont have free shipping yet (waiting on the 90 days), but ive been getting it on and off when ive been specing builds. i wasnt even logged in either

when the OP puts the second card in there a couple of years down the line (which he said he would) the PSU will really not like him. it might just about manage, but i wouldnt want to try it with 2k worth of PC

also, the cards will be seriously bottlenecked by the x8/x8 crossfire.
i believe its up to a 5% drop for the highest end single GPU cards at x8/x8 crossfire vs x16/x16, so the twin GPU of the 6990 will be bottlenecked hugely

i see you arent buying until july. you REALLY ought to wait till then to spec the PC. my PC cost me £455 in mid february. now its down to just over £400. for a PC as expensive as yours, you could be looking at a £200 difference, or even some new faster tech in there (the bulldozer chips are coming out soon)

Yes I am, the PSU is fine and the 16X vs 8X bandwidth isnt worth worrying about Hardocp already done tests showing that you need to be using resolutions of eyefinity(5***X2***+) to even start to see the difference.

that may be so now, but in a couple of years, when these cards are being pushed to the limits when in crossfire by the latest graphics card killers, surely it will be bottlenecked by the x8/x8. which is what i assume the OP wants them for

however, how come ATI say it uses 450W on full load in overclocked mode, when it clearly doesnt

The crossfire speed doesnt matter, I already explained this to you.

Whereas the 5970 stayed within PCI-Express specifications at default clocks, the 6990 makes no attempt to do so, and as such at 375W is the most power hungry card to date.

The reason that the core frequency and memory frequency has been lowered is not because of thermals, but because AMD wanted to keep the default configuration of this video card within the PCIe specifications of 375 Watts or lower. The graphics card itself is in fact engineered to be a 450 Watt capable video card! That means the hardware, the thermal solution, all of it, is rated up to a 450 Watt load capacity. The default configuration of this video card has a lot of headroom.

So again its 375w, but the card PCB/VRM's and cooling solution is designed for "upto" 450w.

For people with too jmuch money, for people who think it must be better because the number is higher right? for people who think a 6870 is better and faster than a 5870 because the model number is higher right?

sounds like it needs 450W for the performance bios to me.

Notice the "up to", manufacturers always over exaggerate the required specs to protect their asses, you know this.

well that sucks. i guess the whole x16/x16 thing is there simply to cater for the x8/x8/x8/x8 quadfire, and maybe to cater for future cards that can use the super speeds.
