Hi Guys n Gals,

So at the moment I'm driving a 53 plate Nissan Almera 1.5

I'm looking at spending 5/6K on a second hand diesel but can't make mind up between either...

Audi A4 2.5 TDI Sport 163 Convertible

or

BMW 1 SERIES 118d

There both going be around 100K miles

What are your thoughts, would you go for something else entirely?

Cheers
Zaf

A cabriolet A4 diesel or a tiny little BMW hatchback hard top?

Stop now, and work out what type of car you want before drilling into the specifics!

The timing chain has stretched on the Almera, dealer quoted around £1200 to fix and my local garage where I get all my M.O.T's done etc said it's not worth fixing and just p/x it.

I know both cars i'm looking at are completley diffrent but I do like them both so that's why I made the thread :p

Is getting a high mileage diesel not a good idea then in this economic climate?

You need to decide on whether you want a convertible or not. This is a fundamental decision. You can then either look at cabrio or hard top cars exclusively. If you are not 100% set on a cabrio why would you have even opened the cabrio for sale page - i dont get it :)

What a strange thread, you either want a convertible or you don't, so if you want one the 1 Series is useless.

But you dont want a diesel cabrio, thats just completley silly. The 2.5 TDI isnt even that economical!

To be fair I would imagine £5k only buys crap examples of both cars. You dont really seem to have the budget to buy either a 1 Series or an Audi A4 cabrio.

Your a better man than me, let me tell you

It's not been easy!

I've been looking at the 1 Series as its similar size to the Almera and I think the 3 Series is a bit chavey! And 5 Series out my price range completely.

Only reason I've just considered the A4 is because I drove past one for sale which didn't seem to bad but didn't reckon I could afford the insurance but I've just checked and its similar to what I'm paying now on the Almera lol

If i was you i wouldnt worry about whats chavvy or not and buy a 3 series rather than a 1

If the Almera is that bad then wouldn't a 3 Series be better even if it is a bit chavvy?

I might also have missed it but are you going to be doing lots of miles every year to make the tradeoff of buying a diesel worth it? Remember that diesel itself is more expensive than petrol.

I'd suggest lowering your standards a bit if you've got 5 grand to play with

I'm open to suggestions :p

I was originally looking at Mazda 6's before the 1 Series

Your gonna get a better Mazda than a 1 series foir that money.
