Actually instead of going for the XFX 5870, it would probably be better to go with the MSI ATI Radeon HD 6870 OC HAWK instead and overclock it.
5870 itself doesn't have much room for overclocking, and also the XFX custom cooler has been reported that while it is not 'loud', some does make an annoying whine noise.
Budget really is tight atm, but I might wait to get a better card. Basically the reason I wanted a card to match that is cos I had one that worked fine for me but recently broke. Why do you want a card, that matches the 9800GX2 in power?
Tell us your budget, and we can tell you your options.
You can see from here you need a 6850 or a 460 an up to match or better your 9800GX2
Given this information and your criteria above, the cheapest upgrade for you would be a 5850.
But the £100 5850 are no longer on offer, I would pay the extra £20 and get a 5870 at £150
Id say your choices are between this and this or 5850.

There is an issue with these cards and windows 7 x64. It causes almost every game to crash. I would advise waiting for this issue to be resolved before buying one of these.
When it does work however its pretty sweet. Runs bad company well.
Keep an eye on this thread if your interested in this card:

I might wait a while and get something at a later stage, I don't need to rush into it. Plus if I wait I might be able to get something better at a higher cost.for £150 you are looking at HD5870, now can be bought for £100-£130 2nd handed!
