50meg Virgin BB worth it ? Heavy newsgroup user!

I can no longer use grabit now. I used to use the accelarator with it so I could have grabit and ssl but the accelarator runs on port 563 but I now need to change over to 443. Im on the platinum account with giganews so I can't try mimo as I simply refuse to pay them anymore. I need a decent news reader that is simple to use and fully supports ssl, oh and it needs to be free.

Gutted I cant use grabit though, by far the best and not clutted like a lot of them, in my opinion:)

Try Unzbin. It's like uTorrent but for Usenet. It fully supports SSL and all the usual bells & whistles. The only qualm I have with it is the fact it doesn't do multi-part downloads (i.e it downloads 10 files at once if you have 10 connections, rather than 1 file 10 times faster). That's a pain once you only have one or two files left in the queue and it slows down a lot due to only using 1-2 connections.

Failing that get a proper downloader like SABNZBD+ or Newsleecher (Usenet is your friend).

Thanks for the info rainmaker. I have tried newsleecher and newsbin pro now. I like both but I think the UI in newsleechers is much better. However, I seem to get faster downloads with newsbin pro. It says my download speeds are 6.7mbps with newsbin pro but only 6 with newsleecher.

I dont really want to pay for either but they do look better than the rest so I will end up paying, just not sure which.

If you're only deciding between those two, go with Newsleecher. As for the speeds, Newsbin Pro measures in a weird way based off Task Manager (and is overly optimistic by a mile). I've raised it with the dev a few times but nothing came of it.

Thanks again. I was swaying towards newsleecher and I think you've made my mind up. I'm running the latest beta and I really like it, especially all the tabs you can switch between like the explorer etc...

Is the supersearch worth getting or not? I just use nzbmatrix for nzbs normally. However, I did used to use the grabit search a lot.

Once my giganews sub hasd run out in 2 weeks I'm going to sign up with astraweb, can't believe I've been paying giganews prices for years. Silly me....

Never been throttled on 50mb - to be honest anyone who says they have are either part of a trial, their internet is just having a bad day or they are lying.

They do, however, shape certain traffic such as unsecured usenet etc, which is no big deal as it's very easy to avoid.

For the record the best usenet download client is http://sabnzbd.org/ :)

I am new to all this

I was a ex-rapidshare subscriber

is giganews the best? I am a diamond package subscriber and whats the best place to get my files? nzbmatrix?

sabnzbd is awesome

i use it with dropbox. Set the dropbox folder to be scanned by sabnzbd for new NZB's and i can drop them in from any pc im at even my phone and they will be qued automatically.

Sabnzbd also pars and un rars your files for you.

I always do my downloading between 12pm and 8am but ive been using port 563 will switch to 443 see how speeds are during the day.

Hey Guys, sorry to bump an old-ish thread, but i've noticed some considerable slowdowns when leeching stuff from Usenet.

i'm on Virgin 50Mb, using SSL port 443, and while i usually get between 2.2 and 2.6MB/s, between about 6PM and 11PM i struggle to see 1MB/s, sometimes dropping off to less than 100KB/s, and sometimes stopping altogether.

Anyone else been seeing similar symptoms?

They appear to be throttling 443, I rarely get more than 200KB/s until I connect via vpn then it runs at pretty much full speed.

Seriously, I would be cancelling my connection if I didn't have vpn access to use.

Dont have a clue what Newsgroups are, sounds like some sort of cult or something?

Anyway ive just downloaded 200mb in 30 seconds on a 50mb line, is that good? Who knows, but im chuffed it was that quick :D
