one interesting thing this could do if it does have as large an impact as the papers are trying to suggest is it could force a reduction in benefits for everyone (they're entitled to the same benefits as British people afaik so cutting them for everyone would work)

It may well not be their intention to do that. Haven't studies shown that Eastern European migrants contribute a net 24% of their income to the economy, even after factoring in the hoarders and those who send their money back home?

This is more of a contribution than millions of work-able people in the UK!

Any A8 national will be able to access income-based Jobseeker’s
Allowance, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit by signing on as
a jobseeker at Jobcentre Plus and meeting the requirements imposed

Does no one else see that as silly? Not the fact they are migrants, but that the UK is expected to pay for everyone in the world?
 
Assuming every immigrants intention is to abuse benefits and not work is very naive, unfortunately there are those that prefer to ride benefits as opposed to working (Brits included).

Sad but true, these border controls seem rather counter-intuitive, if the intent was to restrict migrants by the government it makes no sense that they place the restriction emphasis on the skilled migrants and open the door in a far more unregulated area. We must be missing something...

Wage slaves? They contribute to the economy as a whole. Also I know a few Eastern Europeans that earn a nice wage.

The problem here isn't immigrants but the lazy feckless British people.
 
Bring back the Soviet Union I say, force them all to stay where they belong.

Its not just the 250 per week that they get in bennys' its the added cost to the NHS, the impact on our Education system in that we now have non English speaking children over running classrooms.... theres more cost associated to letting more in, than there is in maintaining our existing populace.

Problem is, we are 'PC' England and if you dont embrace all people all the time, then you are branded racist.

I say if you are not born in England, then to come and live here you have to do 3 years service in the army on the front line. Then if you make it, you can come here... if not, you get a nice funeral.

That is what he was saying. At the moment A8 nationals contribute net, but they don't get the same welfare entitlements as other nationals including British ones.

Independent research has repeatedly shown (can't dig up the papers, not at work PC) that most migrants from the EU make a positive net contribution to the Exchequer, even when taking into account all of the other stuff you think they haven't accounted for (NHS, etc).

Yes, it is true that (only) people at the bottom end of the earnings scale face wage depression... largely because EU migrants are better skilled, more willing to work for less and are more productive than their British counterparts for every hour of work. However, government policy (ie welfare) more than make up for the net wage depression, which is said to be between 0.4 and 1% lower earnings. However, those same immigrants make a net contribution to the coffers that in turn fund public services on which lower earners are more reliant - so it balances out imo.
