A few days ago I found my self looking at graphics cards for my future build, I was looking at 6990's and 580's when I thought to my self just because I have a high budget does it mean I have to spend insane amounts of money on a insanely powerful video card when I will be playing at a standard 1080p 1900x1200 screen ? So my question is what graphics card would allow me to play current and upcoming games at mostly full settings with a good fps and that's cheap enough so I could upgrade to a "just good enough" card next year and the year after etc ...
 
Try to look at mid-range cards such as the 560ti and the 6950. You could get one just below £200 and does a good job at 1080p. I've got a 560ti myself and it's great.

I have the GTX560Ti aswell, however for 1080p res I'd go for the GTX480 if power consumption/heat/noise isn't an issue for you, or if it is then the GTX570.

For nearly half the price you can get a Reference 1 2Gb 6950 and unlock it to 6970, 2 of them in xfire for about £30 more absolutely kill it!

You can grow tomatoes with it too if you redirect the heat:D

You would be better off with the 480 SE although it's £40+ dearer for similar performing 6950>70, the Soc has far too many problems imo hence why at the moment it's £30 cheaper than the slower SE.

But it seems like the Asus with the Reference cooler runs cooler (but louder fan)
 
HD5870 at £150
GTX480 at £200
HD6950 2GB at £210 (then unlock the extra shaders)

Pick one of those and you're golden. :)

Personally i'd be looking at either the HD6950 with unlock or the GTX480 SOC at £220 as I believe the stock GTX480 is a bit on the noisy side - but then it depends how much that bothers you.

Exactly this and hold on to the no-more-than-£200 spending rule. Allow £25 extra for an aftermarket cooler/better model.

Think you've got the resolutions confused! 1920x1200 this is 1200p! It should be 1920x1080 for 1080p, which is so called by 1080 horizontal lines of vertical resolution! Sorry for being a dork!
Anyway the above cards 5870 or 6850 (unlocked) will be fine at that res!

It's 1680x1050, not 1650x1080, and is NOT 1080p! Sorry for being a dork!

Noted! stand corrected 1050p it is then! Not been on that lower resolution for 4 years now! Taken on the chin! ;)

Yeah go for the 6950 and unlock (thats what I'm doing at pay day). Just wondering is the 2gb version needed at 1080p or is the 1gb version better
 
Think the 2GB version is more geared towards eyefinity setups, 1GB of VRAM should be more than enough at anything up to 1920x1200.
