So after your advice I bought a 20D at Christmas, still need to get into it a bit more but it does some great pictures of the kids and our exploits.

Here's the fun part, wife shuts the boot on my car on the camera :( lens is now bent and non functioning, no real problem I'll just find another one but all the EF-S 18 - 55mm's on Ebay are about £80 - 100 I was wondering if there was anything better for my purposes, I mainly photograph my kids at quite close range inside.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's unlucky! But lucky it wasn't an expensive lens!
Depending on what your budget is, take a look at the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 non-VC lens. It is more expensive at ~£230 but it's a great upgrade from the kit lens and a constant 2.8 aperture will help for indoors.

Thanks, bit more than I was hoping to spend, don't mind £100 ish but I'm not that into it, to warrant the additional expense. TBH I'm only just venturing off the green square :p

Side note, I've just won a identical non working lens with staining on the front glass for £20 odd quid, just need to find out how to strip them down and cut and shut the two together :)

this is why i love L lenses :D the car boot would've dented before you break a 24-70 lol

1DSmk3 + 24-70 fell 7 feet onto tarmac when my tripod fell over the other day, picked it up and carried on shooting with no worries at all. Note to self: make sure all the legs are out properly :(

I don't any L lenses but are you sure about that??

pretty confident, as i say i dropped mine 7 feet onto concrete, being pulled by a 15kg bag and i picked it up, removed the smashed circular polariser, and carried on shooting. I imagine dropping a boot lid onto concrete would damage it more.

L lenses can take a hammering, but I don't think I'd suggest testing the theory. ;-)

A replacement lens should be the 50mm f1.8 as for the money it can't be bettered... Or even three times the money...
