I'm sitting here freezing my **** off because the idiot building managers in this office think that just because we have a few days sun that is just cause to push air con to the same extent that you'd expect in the sahara.

Can someone tell me why in god's name anyone ever thought that installing air con units in office buildings in this country was a good idea? We do not have the climate that requires it, and it is shocking to think how much energy is wasted. Not to mention how many days work are lost because of the spread of germs and illness, through recirculation of dirty air. Just open a window FFS!!

Air con is fantastic in offices, mine has massive south facing windows, if the air con is off, temperatures very very rapidly become uncomfortable.

Have you any idea how hot the average open plan office gets without air con? I contract so see loads of different environments, including ones with broken air con systems in the past.

Its not an option :p

Push it to same extent as the sahara? Because its hotter there does it need to be colder than you would have anywhere else with air con on?

We do have a climate that requires it, I certainly would not want to work in a stuffy office that is over heating with other people who are also getting overly hot.

Sometimes air con is needed.

Slightly different to your environment but when I used to work at Currys our air con had broke and we were waiting for it to be repaired. This was during the summer whilst having a typical British mini-heatwave. With about 200 televisions on and 100 pc/laptops the heat inside the store was unbearable and a lot of customers who had walked in, had walked back out saying they couldn't shop in these conditions. Didn't get the air con fixed until about October and by then there was no need for it.

I've worked in offices without it, even in summer and have never been in a situation where it was too uncomfortable to work. As long as you can open a window you're fine, unfortunately this little piece of engineering genius seems to have been lost to modern architects. Someone should tell them about this amazing thing called "the wind", and how it does what air con does for free!!

My hands are literally freezing. This is not pleasant. :/

Edit: I wouldn't mind if the building managers were competent enough to use it properly, but it appears not. If the only options are freezing cold or boiling hot, what the hell is the point?

Ask someone to set the temperature at a more appropriate level then, it sounds more like a problem with someone who decided to set it to 10 degrees than anything else.

Ah yes, because the wind is always blowing.

So you're saying because the wind isn't always blowing, that's good enough reason to force windows not to open and deny people the ability to get fresh clean air? Not to mention, force them to use air con when the air temp simply does not warrant it. Ah thank god for genius british engineering!

Air conditioning is the best single invention found in an office environment.

cold as possible, keep the jacket on, shivering makes you work harder.

Wish i had air con here at my college, windows are open and its still bloody roasting.Air con is a great thing to have, i was lucky enough to have it in my tent when serving my second tour of Iraq.It was a little bit cold at night and first thing in the morning but was 100 x better then being too hot.
