It probably is: if you see a big (>5cm dia) spider indoors in the UK it's one of them.

I used to do this. Then one time my room took it upon itself to fill itself with flies. It took me 2 days to clean up the fly corpses. I decided that I'd prefer spiders and their natural fly catchers in my room to flies, and now we live in harmony.

Until this happens I'll happily keep killing them.
You should have used a hoover, done in 10 minutes.
