Chernobyl disaster 25th anniversary (pics)

It's certainly an eerie place. Not scary but haunting I would imagine. I too would love to visit, despite the risks but I would imagine getting anywhere near the place requires special clearance.

You can go on a tour. Though it's quite expensive.

One of my loves is old and ruined things, decay, abandoned stuff, post apocalytpic.. from a simple overgrown trackbed to a whole city so Pripyat has fascinated me so much.

The erieeness.. lack of people, spooky stuff... almost post apocalyptic.

I find pictures of the Chernobyl disaster mesmerising and I would love to visit, but what happened there was truly horrendous. I believe they are building a new sarcophagus to slide over the old one before it falls down, but it will be the biggest moving structure ever and will require years of work.

Amazing pictures. Me and a few mates are planning a visit this year so I will be sure to take plenty of pictures.

The annoying thing about Chernobyl pics are a lot of them are staged with photographers placing gas masks in among childrens toys etc. Read an article about chernobyl a while back and that was one of the things mentioned in it.

Yeah I looked at that but the tour (iirc) does not actually go into Pripyat, just the surrounding area. I would like to go into the city centre, the fairground is of particular interest.

I think it was COD4 or maybe STALKER 'making of' videos which I found really interesting.

I have plans to go to Auschwitz and Berkowitz next year (yeah I know I'm a morbid so and so) so I doubt the missus will allow any more ventures. Maybe one for the year after next :).

Due to its contamination by plutonium isotopes, Pripyat cannot be inhabited for another 24,000 years.

It is very sad to see, and especially sad to hear about all the people who died or have had their lives and/or bodies effected while trying to clear up the mess.

I don't know about clearing the site up but they want to build a new sarcophagus because the current one is in a right state. Apparently there are problems securing the funds to build it.

Is there a chance of another radiation leak if the sarcophagus falls apart? Or was that not put on to stop the radiation leak?

Because personally I believe if there is a chance that there could be another radiation leak I would pay for a new sarcophagus for it myself!

I thout the sarcophagus has massive holes in it, so was leaking radiation, but is very unlikely to leak radioactive material? I maybe completely wrong.

October 1986: To mark the end of the clean-up operation atop reactor 3, the authorities ordered three men to attach a red flag to the summit of the chimney. A group of liquidators had already made two fruitless attempts by helicopter, so the three men had to climb the 78 metre chimney via a spiral staircase, despite the dangerous radiation levels. Radiation expert Alexander Yourtchenko carried the pole, followed by Valéri Starodoumov with the flag, while lieutenant-colonel Alexander Sotnikov ascended with the radio. The whole operation was timed to last only 9 minutes given the high radiation levels. At then end, the trio were rewarded with a bottle of Pepsi (a luxury in 1986) and a day off.

September 1986: Liquidators clean the roof of reactor 3. Initially, workers tried clearing the radioactive debris using West German, Japanese and Russian robots, but they could not cope with the extreme radiation levels, so the authorities decided to use humans. Employees could not stay any longer than 40 seconds any one time, before the radiation dose they received reached the maximum a human should receive in his entire life. Many liquidators have since died or suffer from severe health problems

Wow, great set of links in this thead thanks. :)
