Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

May as well play it safe and cancel your card; banks are usually very swift and will send you a new one within days. I could never say somebody is stupid for being safe and cancelling their card after being told their personal information has been compromised. That's unfair and harsh, and I'd say it's an intelligent thing to do, by erring on the side of caution. By all means, I strongly recommend you cancel your card, change your password and so on. It takes very little time to avoid that small chance you could be the victim of online fraud or theft.

Absolutely shocking on Sony's part though, almost criminal negligence.

Ok ok, what I meant was, it may have been over the top to cancel it.

I think it most certainly was old chap :o:p

Banks have dedicated fraud teams specifically for things like this, you wont be liable if your information is leaked, dont worry guys, blimey!

If i re-call it is kind of protected but their is awhole lot of "Well prove it" were as credit cards seem to be more relaxed about it.

Now im abit like rp touch wood *touches desk* no one has ever stolen and used my card details in the past were as another member of my family has had their card been used fraudulently more than 4 times =/

What amused me was that i mentioned PSN whilst on the phone and the guy said "Oh yes, we've had other customers doing the same (cancelling cards)"

Dunno, they didn't give me a blanket "you are covered" when I mentioned Debit Cards and it was a Visa Debit used.

I believe the scheme is called Visa Debit Chargeback. I have used it personally (not for fraud but an item I did not receive or was unhappy with or something).
The bank send you a form to fill in etc, As I recall I had to be a bit persuasive to convince the bank that they needed to give me my money back. It's almost like the Direct Debit guarantee, banks don't actively promote you can get your money back, but you can.

Thanks for the info.

cant believe it took Sony so long to release that statement, they must have known about this for a week now.

It's gonna take a long long time for Sony's reputation to recover from this once the news hits the press

What bugs me more is if the attack started on the 17th why the hell wasn't it taken down then, As if they were given a full day to ***** data they can get im assuming a fair bit in a full day.

They got hacked into, Hardly climinal negligence. Anyone can be hacked, regardless of security, Hell even the department of defence in America was hacked. Hackers if they want access, generally they'll find a way. Gotta be honest, I'm kinda jealous at their realm of knowledge, what i wouldnt give to have the ability to sniff out routes into secure systems :D

Although after writing that, I'm wondering whether you're referring to how long it took for them to come clean :D

Makes you wonder if someone else told them something was wrong rather than them noticing it? Unless they were trying to patch the attacker out for a while and found they couldn't and pulled it down?

Yeah banks refund immediatly, then basically tell their customer not to worry, change ur details, and it's never mentioned again.

Gets passed over to a fraud team and dealt with on ur behalf

Mine hasn't, every time my debit card has been cloned (well only twice now) they have made me fill out tons of paperwork and it then goes to the fraud team. Only once they have looked into it the money was refunded (took 14 working days last time).

When it happened on my credit card they refunded it instantly. No questions asked.

It is partly to do with the 'we took six days to tell you that your bank details may or may not have been stolen from us' angle, yes.

More likely their access records to those dbs show when the information was taken, rather than them noticing it and waiting to switch off PSN.

They will offer everyone a free game and people will love them again, give it a month and will all be forgotton about.

What I want to say has now been said many times, why wait a week to tell people? At least its looking doubtful card details have been stolen, having been over a week now people would have started seeing dodgy transactions tail end of last week. Longer payment information isnt used the more worthless it becomes

Surely thats how the lawsuits can occur now due to the fact it took Sony a week to tell us? Them being hacked isnt their fault unless their security was pants which i have the impression it was

Question as Im confused, surely things like passwords were additionally encrypted - its not like any of the information was likely to be in an easily readable format. So even though the datas been taken theres a possibility its not accessible?

Surely things like Information Audits would ensure layers of encryption so even if the db was copied, the data remained secure?
