Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

i told people to expect huge delays earlier and they all jumped down my throat, stuff like this takes ages, i used the GT5 analogy earlier, i fully expect this to take several weeks. they said it is being re-built, if its being done from scratch it could take months, if they are simply re-building what is there and making extra re-enforcements then weeks.

if it does take months, i honestly dont know what im going to do, if your thinking of selling your ps3 do it now, the money your going to get is going to bomb over the coming weeks. in a months time you will probably be able to pick up a pre-owned ps3 for next to nothing and some stores may even refuse to buy them, if they get too many.

Brilliant, mine has YLOD, will be a great time for me to pick up a new one.

Last week in anticipation of having a long holiday from work I bought Black Ops so I can play with my work mates, Portal 2 because I can activate it on steam and use it on my PC and MacBook. I also bought Fifa 11 For my Son but I can't play any of them, Could be that by the time PSN comes back Portal 2 will be an old bargain bin game and I'll be last to the party :(

7 day refund? or whatever it is

i would just do that

Anyway............ now that:

- Some people have cancelled their credit cards
- Some people have sold their PS3s before the shops "stop taking them"
- Some people have bought a 360
- Some people have blamed hackers
- Some people have worn white hats
- Some people have worn black hats
- Some people have shared their intricate knowledge of hacking with us
- Some people have shouted at the top of their voices "Nothing can be done"
- Some people have masturbated over pictures of geohot
- Some people have hired assassins to kill geohot
- Some people have reminisced about the beloved Other Os feature.

can we have.....some funny gifs, surely some related ones must have appeared online by now? :)

And I thought they guy who cancelled his credit card was being a bit drastic :D

Seriously though, I would assume another 2 weeks max. At the end of the day it is just a technical problem (redesigning or safeguarding the PSN). Any technical problem can be fixed if you throw enough money and/or resources at it. I would assume that 3 weeks of downtime/lost revenue would cost them much more than to pay over the odds to get people to redesign/fix the network. Month or months is pushing it to be honest.

I suppose it depends on what they need to do. If it is a complete redesign and implementation I could see it taking a while (imagine the testing/penetration testing requirements for that to happen!). Hopefully it won't come to that :)

Is it needed to change passwords on all major accounts?

It would depend on what passwords you use on PSN and what email.

If you're really unlucky and your PSN password is one you use in multiple places, including on your main email (which happens to be your PSN account email) then I'd change everything asap.

I can't even remember the passwords I used on my PSN accounts, I think one I have used elsewhere, but not on the email of the account it's attached to.

well they are saying rebuild, so that usually means from the ground up.

i suppose they could release a basic version, and then add to it for months and months, like a version without a friends list or store, etc, just to get people playing again, then keep updating it, but i doubt it, they will probably try and do the whole hog in one go.

They've just said on the radio that sony have bought an outside team in, to find out how they were compromised.

Not sure what to make of that, they didn't/don't know... nearly a week of a problem?

Shessh, changed all my passes, the card i was using on the psn account had expired thankfully.

This sounds like deja vu from the PS3/PSN launch :D

Nah they skipped the pen testing last time and nothing bad happened....

At the end of the day it is down and no one is happy about it but if it becomes more secure by staying down another week or two then I am quite happy to do other things in the mean time.

What are you smoking? The network itself is fine, but its the quality/layers of security it uses thats the issue and needs to rebuilt, not the whole way PSN actually works as a network...

yeah well its what i would do if i was in charge, get a simple and secure version up as soon as possible, then keep the team working on updates day and night (not literally but you know what i mean) for weeks/months until it was better than before. but i would ensure it was as secure as possible, maybe even have double/triple the levels of security there was before.

although updating their ps3 on a weekly basis may **** off some customers its better than it being out for an absolute age whilst they do everything at once.

Why? You're behaving like we'll all be OAPs in hovercars by the time PSN is back online. Stop trying to scare people.

To turn that round, you don't know that what you are saying is correct either :) Unless......

Did you hack Sony? :D
